City council approved a contract with the Congregational Church to purchase land for 100000 dollars for an off street parking lot. The May 5 election showed voters 829 for land acquisition and 343 against. The mayor and city recorder are authorized to sign with church officers.
William N. Oatis, AP correspondent freed after 25 months in Prague, says he was questioned up to eight hours daily during a two month period before his espionage trial. He describes jail methods, injections he believes were vitamins, sun lamp exposure, and tuberculosis treatment as he plans to review his case and reunite with his wife.
Accidents claimed two lives in Minneapolis on Monday. Three year old Carol McCombs died after falling from a bed onto a radiator. Kendall B. Carlson, 38, of 3926 Girard Ave. N. died from injuries in a gasoline drum explosion while welding.
The Senate defeated 45 to 41 a plan to grant the President a 90 day power to freeze wages prices and rents during a grave national emergency. The Byrd amendment limits freezing to wartime declaration or congressional resolution. Sen Taft warned the Capehart proposal undermines free enterprise.
Boston television radio star Arthur Godfrey had a very good night, according to Massachusetts General Hospital bulletin issued today.
Mary Jane Gerhart and Robert Heimer head St Augustine High School class of seniors. Mary Jane, daughter of Mrs Mary Ann Gerhart, graduates with 97 percent average and co edited the Star Record. Robert, son of Mr and Mrs Marvin Heimer, has 94.01 percent average and was on the Shamrock staff and school activities.
Apple Valley California widow recounts Capt. Joseph McConnell Jr.'s long struggle to become a pilot. He joined in 1940 at 18, faced medical corps, navigator, then air corps roles, finally earned wings in 1948. Korea duty followed after initial rejections for combat. The pilot maintained he was born to fly.
Air Force orders Capt. Joseph McConnell Jr. to fly no more combat missions over Korea after surpassing Capt. Manuel Fernandez Jr. as top jet ace with 16 confirmed kills. Both pilots, grounded within days, had sought extended missions. Ground battles persist as Chinese forces press in Central and Eastern Korea amid air operations over enemy positions and targets near Chaeryong and Sinuiji.

Three armed bandits robbed the Depot Bar at 241 E Kellogg Blvd St Paul taking $3000 after forcing customers to the table. One suspect was arrested as the ringleader and a second was sought. The break-in followed another $3000 holdup in Minneapolis by a vending machine crew.
Lagos reports 46 dead and over 200 injured after three days of rioting over independence. Kano, a northern hub, resembles a battlefield with barbed wire trenches and troops on duty. A North Nigeria emergency declared as clashes erupt after Kano canceled a political meeting by the Action Group in the Strangers Quarter.

LAS VEGAS Nevada 2 An atomic blast as powerful as a minor earthquake lit the dawn sky over the Nevada desert signaling the last conventional shot before a nuclear projectile fired from a 280 MM cannon next Monday ends the spring 1953 series. AEC said 60 tests were done including drug exposure to radiation. An unmanned Navy drone landed after probing the plume as 46 aircraft conducted missions nearby.
Jacqueline Cochran, at 43, becomes the first woman to exceed Mach 1 on a 100 kilometer closed course near Rogers Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. She clocks 652.337 mph, surpassing the 100 kilo jet record and the prior women’s jet mark, with Maj. Charles Yeager assisting.
Frankfort residents report a red robin nesting in the cylindrical shade of a traffic signal. The bird builds its nest and has laid eggs, appearing frequently day and night in the small Indiana town.
