In Madison two parallel conventions prepare state tickets amid factional battles. The Baensch camp backs Gov. Lafollette. the Cook and anti-third termers convene at Fuller Opera House aiming to nominate Samuel A. Cook for governor. Delegates number in the hundreds as courts may rule on recognition.
At Fargo on May 19 the North Dakota Republican state convention demonstrated Alex McKenzie's control of the party. Delegates endorsed Roosevelt and named H. C. Hansbrough chair, McKenzie national committeeman, with eight delegates ratified for Chicago. The event ends Major Murphy's bid for governor and seats Lyons from Kidder county for Sarles.
The Republican state convention in Pocatello Idaho on May 19 elected national delegates Senator W. B. Heyburn C B Hall Grainger W Borah F R Gooding I W Standrod and J M Stevens The resolutions endorse Theodore Roosevelt for nomination for president.

May 19 Chefoo Russian refugees claim Japanese bombarded Port Arthur last Monday and that the battleship Shikishima and armored cruiser Asama struck mines and sank. The report, though, is not believed by local officials. Shikishima, 14 850 tons, built 1898, commanded by Koragaki. Asama, 9 572 tons, built 1898, commanded by Svatshushiro.
A Tokio telegram says two Japanese divisions moved close to Mukden cutting Kuropatkin's retreat northward. Official Russian dispatches note 6,000 troops at Khabalen near Fenghhuancheng and Japanese entrenchments with patrols toward Siuyen awaiting weather to seize the strategic junction of three roads.
Paris dispatch says official advices indicate Japanese forces have occupied Newchwang, as reported by the St. Petersburg correspondent of the Mafin. The claim places the city under Japanese possession in the ongoing conflict.
A Japanese land reconnaissance near Vladivostok proves ineffective as 4000 Cossacks harry General Kuroki's rear, destroying a field railway near Wiju and bridges. At Anju eighty Japanese repulse 800 Cossacks with 60 killed. survivors pursued. Japanese engineers hurry from Seoul to fix communications.
Breslau May 19 report says a young woman near the grand stand concealed a bomb in her clothing during the royal procession for Emperor Nicholas. She allegedly refused further comment and her father was said to be prostrated. In Poltava the emperor arrived to an immense crowd and reviewed the troops before blessing the regiment.
Tokio reports the Second Japanese army landed on May 5 under naval cover with minimal enemy resistance. Allied forces claim 146 Japanese dead and wounded across several engagements near Pulandien and Pitsewo, with rail and telegraph lines destroyed. A Red Cross train proceeded on May 13.
The Japanese drive out 1,600 Russians on May 18 and destroy rail lines. The combined fleet then heads southward from Waichau. Russians re enter Newchwang with 1,000 infantry and two batteries, preparing for a rapid evacuation.
London dispatch dated May 18 reports the Dalny defenses withstand Russian attempts to blow up decks and piers as telegraphed by the Chefoo correspondent of the Standard.

The Methodist general conference elected J. F. Berry editor of the Epworth Herald as bishop on the first ballot, with 531 votes of 747 cast. Henry Spellmeyer fell short by eight votes. W. F. McDowell by 58. A second ballot followed. debate noted a proposed reduction of the general conference size from 750 to 550 members.
The South Carolina Democratic state convention elected as delegates at large to the St. Louis convention Senator B R Tillman Governor D C Heyward Mayor R H Rhett of Charleston and General Will Jones of Columbia. They did not instruct the delegation but adopted the unit rule. Tillman signaled no objection to Parker but could not commit vote yet. Heyward Rhett Jones and the 14 district delegates favored Parker. All eight teen delegates opposed Hearst. Platform denounces Crum as collector at Charleston Port and tariff measures, calls for economy in white affairs, and omits references to earlier party platforms and the financial question.
At the Baptist anniversaries in Cleveland on May 19 a plan was unveiled to raise a $510000 endowment fund to educate native ministers in foreign fields. The fund will be invested in the United States and reach full endowment in five years, with tenfold impact expected in ten years. The policy targets missions in eastern nations including China, Japan and the Philippines.
Des Moines May 19 A demented Mrs Trussies from St Paul swung her three year old daughter over Walnut street bridge and threw her into the Des Moines river. A riverman saved both with the waters closing over the child. The child may die.
London May 19 The House of Commons by a 55 vote majority sustained Premier Balfour defeating a bid to overturn the government on fiscal reform. A heated debate followed with strong exchanges. Joseph Chamberlain publicly concurred in the premier’s stance to push the issue to the next parliament.
Frank White, a tailor, was found guilty of murder in the third degree for shooting Jerome Manaige, a Bowery bartender, after an argument over drinks. Manaige died a few hours later. In Belle Vernon, Clyde Robinson aged twenty one killed his wife aged nineteen and then shot himself, dying instantly.
