In Nebraska count of 1383 of 2127 precincts Eisenhower leads with 57,921 votes while Kefauver trails the Democratic ballot with 32,019. Nebraskans outside top 13 cities could vote in either primary. Results are nonbinding on delegates.
A cluster of quiet area school elections in 12 districts featured ties and incumbents held, with Grand Meadow reporting a tie for two candidates and a one year board vacancy to be filled by appointment. Brownsdale election results included two winners and two strong write ins over 100 votes. Hayfield Blooming Prairie and Lyle votes elected several incumbents while Lyle approved selling closed rural schools.
A Canadian CF100 jet on a false alarm intercept mission struck a Grey Nuns of the Cross convent near Ottawa, killing 11 nuns and injuring others. The two crewmen, a priest, and a cook also died or died later. 22 escaped. The North Star transport bound for Montreal caused the mix up.
In Minnesota near Big Falls, Ed Miller and John Moore, both Webster City, Iowa residents, died when their 1955 station wagon left Highway 6 and burned after striking an embankment. W N Primrose, 42, of Webster City, survived with serious burns and a broken leg after escaping through a window amid spreading gasoline flames.
Austin School District 27 voters approved a 4.4 million dollar bond in a special election by 1088 to 674 to fund a school expansion program. The measure adds a seventh board member, reelects Dr. R. R. Wright and Richard Dougherty, and outlines projects including junior high on Ellis Avenue and multiple elementary schools. Several construction deadlines span 1937 to 1958 with staged openings and a rural district representation recommendation.
A six year old boy, David Ree, was struck by a car on Mill near High at 12 50 p m on Tuesday. He is out of the critical list and in satisfactory condition at St Olaf Hospital. The driver Tom Holgate, 504 S St Paul, was westbound on Mill. Witnesses said the boy darted into the street from behind a parked car. A teacher said first graders were crossing at designated intersections but some crossed mid street. The accident occurred five minutes before the 12 55 p m school start.
A three night bipartisan fund drive in Alexandria raised 1163.47 with 75 percent of residents contacted contributing. Proceeds will be split between county party organizations based on votes for president in 1952 and governor in 1954. Final night yielded 234.92 from 256 donations as volunteers collected from poorer city wards.
Arion Liebl 17 a Walnut Grove High School senior was fatally shot in a hunting accident west of Walnut Grove. His friend Joseph Freund 16 discharged a .22 pistol through Liebls heart. coroner Dr. W A Brand of Redwood Falls ruled it accidental with no inquest. Liebl was baseball team manager and top student and was to join a senior class trip to Chicago postponed by one week.
President Eisenhower calls all Americans to join in prayer on Memorial Day May 30 seeking an enduring peace founded on mercy and justice.
President Soekarno arrives in Washington for a state visit with President Eisenhower. A full-dress reception and a meeting at the White House are planned after he receives the golden key to Washington. He will address Congress tomorrow before a two week tour.
In Grand Meadow the school district elected Joe Stejskal to the board with 160 votes while Ben Wright and Melvin Anderson tied for the second seat at 153 each. John Nielsen received 105 votes and Carroll Main 44. 309 total votes cast. The tie creates a one year vacancy to be filled by the board.
Hayfield school board expands to seven seats with three rural members elected. Everett Blanchard wins 160 votes and Lyall Larson 150 votes while Wayne Grans ee collects 116. Incumbents Arnold Fredrickson and Burnham Nemitz did not seek reelection.
In Stewartville District 130 Jr. election a light vote produced two incumbents Glen Jahns and Lloyd Lenn each with 33 votes. The total ballots cast were 33.
Brownsdale lists five write in candidates and two filed contenders for two school board posts. Details continue on page 11.
An American B47 Stratojet bomber crashed about 12 miles off Land's End in the Atlantic. A major air search was launched along the south English coast. One parachute was sighted six and a half miles offshore, and one survivor was picked up by a French trawler. The bomber normally carries a crew of three.
Two Erie Mining Co. anglers Raymond Mattsfield and Glen Buescher drowned near Lake Vermillion after a dawn fishing trip. A third victim, 16 year old Dennis Shotka, died in the Blue Earth River at Mankato during a class picnic. High winds hindered search and recovery efforts.
A Canadian mother from Turner Valley Alberta meets Mayo Clinic doctors in Rochester Minnesota to decide on blood transfusion use for her 5 year old daughter Judy Maddison. Surgeons will not operate without consent to transfusions if needed and the operation aims to close a small hole in the heart muscle wall.
Hog prices rose again at the Hormel market with top hogs at $16.60 per hundredweight. This is the best price since August 20 when top hogs reached $16.75. Butchers and packers advanced 35 cents, and stags 40 cents, as receipts remained light.
Canadian iron ore grain coal and general cargo moved slowly as the Great Lakes St Lawrence shipping strike entered its seventh day. An unofficial survey counted over 100 ships from Lake Superior to the lower St Lawrence idled by the Seafarers' International Union action. Farmers and manufacturers warned of potential feed grain shortages if no deal is reached. The strike was prompted by SIU demands for higher wages against two Carriers' Association members.
Mrs. John Van Blair of Morton Minnesota unearthed her gold wedding ring while planting radishes ending a decades long search. She had believed the band lost in the yard and kept hoping for a find. The ring fits and shows no tarnish.
Gerald P. Connelly former Teamsters Local 548 organizer and Bryant Flick appeal to the Supreme Court from a Hennepin County District Court conviction in a Minneapolis labor bombing case.
French Premier Mollet asked Nikolai Bulganin to open East West barriers and use press radio and film to reduce prejudice. He cited mutual exchange of ideas as beneficial for both sides. The luncheon followed a 24 hour talks with French and Soviet leaders including Pineau and Molotov.
The H bomb test was postponed again today just one hour and 326 minutes before shot time. A new tentative date was set for Thursday as weather and equipment delays linger.
