TWO MEN KILLED IN TRAIN WRECK IN FINLAYSON
Sandstone Minnesota May 16. A Northern Pacific fast freight from the Twin Cities to Duluth wrecked at Finlayson likely after an open switch. Head brakeman W. E. Young of St Paul and fireman Frank St Johns of Duluth were killed. Engineer Michael Lynch of St Paul was severely injured. The wreck trapped and incinerated the two men as nine box cars telescoped. The Finlayson fire department fought the blaze eight hours as a Duluth wrecking crew cleared the line. The train carried inflammable merchandise including tar felt which complicated suppression. Conductor Bailey survived with minor injuries. Northern Pacific officials headed to the scene to determine blame.
