May 16 Taarskoe Selo reports a soldier of the guard regiment confessed to accepting a large bribe to assist in murdering Emperor Nicholas. The plot’s masterminds remain elusive, with a few underlings arrested and authorities silent on further details.
New York May 16 A warrant charging forgery is to be sought against a defendant in the case of George B Brugham manager of the International relieve helders committee.
In Madison on May 16 the senatorial race neared conclusion but two vote changes altered plans. Anti Stephenson Republicans dropped Esch for Hatten. 53 votes pledged to Hatten would have elected, yet one voter shifted to Stephenson and two abstained, leaving Hatten at 50 on nine ballots. The caucus adjourned with no decision, Democrats expected to help soon. Afterward the legislature took one ballot: Hatten 50, Stephenson 46, Bird 14, scattered 11.
Washington May 16 direct testimony connected negro soldiers with the Brownsville Texas shooting affray of August 3 1906. Witnesses Mr and Mrs George W Randall and Jose Martinez testified they lived opposite the post on Garrison road and saw soldiers leave the post during the shooting. Martinez said he saw the men firing as they ran.
Cleveland May 14 The Republican conference at Columbus failed to unite Taft and Foraker factions, boosting Democratic prospects for electing Senator Foraker's successor. Ohio's current legislature leans Republican on joint ballot, but Democrats claim a fair chance to overcome the GOP with favorable district battles and midterm shifts.
Pittsburg brokers C R Richardson and A B McGraw arrested on conspiracy to bribe in the Pittsburg and Tube City railroad scandal involving 70000 dollars and franchise bills from McKeesport to Pittsburg. William A. Martin, a common council member, was convicted on conspiracy and is bonded pending appeal. Richardson and McGraw allegedly furnished President Cameron the money, which later vanished and led to a suit for its recovery.
Chicago May 16. A compromise between contractors and unions ends the bricklayers and laborers strike, enabling between 7000 and 8000 idle workers to go back to work after a ten day layoff.
Abraham Ruef pleaded guilty to extortion in Judge Dunne's court yet claimed innocence of the charged crime. He admitted conniving in municipal corruption while blaming press attacks for his ruined reputation, begged for mercy, and asked the jury be dismissed for sentence two weeks hence. He fainted in court, with attorneys withdrawing in disagreement.
In a long confession from his cell at 2849 Fillmore Street Ruef asks reporters to believe his denunciation of corruption while insisting he is innocent of the charges against him in the French restaurant cases. He describes facing possible death for his loved ones and vows to protect the innocent while not labeling Mayor Schmitz.
May 16 Boise Idaho. In the Steunenberg murder case counsel clash over bias of talesmen and President Roosevelt. Taft Roosevelt referenced as defense tests jurors while Judge Wood orders proceedings to continue. Peremptory challenges may reshape the tentative jury amid heated exchanges between Darrow Richardson Borah and the state.
In Rome on May 16 Signor Tittoni told the chamber of deputies that Italy supports limits on armament and would join discussions at The Hague. He backed Austro German reservations as a practical caveat while noting Britain has not yet offered a concrete formula. He said if the formula is impractical, the discussion may be postponed without conflict.
In Chicago on May 16 police found two mutilated men in the Chicago River creating a double murder mystery. One body remains unidentified while the other is identified as William Bishop a sailor formerly from Ogdensburg New York. Investigators believe the pair were murdered and their bodies discarded in the river.
Frederick A. Burnham president and George D. Eldridge an officer of Mutual Reserve Life Insurance face grand larceny and forgery indictments and must stand trial in New York County after Justice Dowling denies their change of venue request.
Fire at McCanna North Dakota destroyed the St. Anthony and Dakota elevator and the Imperial elevator, plus the Great Northern depot, a house and barn, and a box car. Wheat in one elevator was 16,000 bushels. the other was empty. Loss about $30,000, partially insured.
Pittsburg reports twenty one Carnegie Hero Fund awards nationwide after bravery acts in the Cornell university fire at Ithaca New York and the Larchmont disaster, with most cases arising in Block Island Sound. In Washington the opening date for the Chippewa Indian reservation lands is July first under homestead laws, covering 229,297 acres in Minnesota.
In Joplin Missouri on May 16 Mamie Ruff sixteen and Ruby Gardner six were drowned in Shoal creek near the city. They were part of a five member boating party when the accident occurred.
Vienna reports show socialists and anti Semites lead in Austrian elections. Socialists surge from eleven to about sixty seats, while anti Semites grow from twenty six to around sixty with new ballots. Clerical anti Semite bloc may reach ninety members. Young Czechs collapse from forty five to three seats. Other items note a 15 year old killer in St Louis and a Kansas liquor destruction.
The submarines Lake and Octopus, after preliminary maneuvers by the naval trial board, were submerged near the naval coaling station at Bradford for a twenty four hours submerged habitability test. On board Lake were nine men and sixteen on board Octopus.
