Wreck on the Milwaukee Road two miles south of Pratt involved 28 cars from the 90 car freight No 63. Estimated damage 200000. No serious injuries. Wrecking crews from Minneapolis and Major City work to clear 450 to 500 feet of track with reopening expected by Friday.
A Milwaukee Railroad local freight derailed near Des Moines killing about 175 head of cattle from Madrid bound stock cars. Assistant division superintendent Robert Riedl said a wheel failure on a lead car caused the derailment tearing up roughly 500 feet of track.
Twenty six cars of a Milwaukee Road freight train derailed along the Springfield right of way eight miles southeast of Elkhorn spilling gasoline and merchandise. Rails and ties ripped up while traffic tied up on Walworth County Trunk 6. No injuries reported as cleanup began near the Springfield depot.
Funeral services for R. J. Lindberg 85 longtime Detroit Lakes mayor will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.
South Korean infantrymen killed or wounded at least 400 Communists in savage close quarters battles along the 155 mile front. U S Sabre jets destroyed three MIGs and damaged two others while hundreds of Sabres bombarded supply targets deep in North Korea and along the lines. Eighth Army reports Chinese attacks repelled as South Korean forces claimed 218 Chinese killed or wounded near Kumhwa and Nam River clashes produced additional casualties.
Mrs. Joe Cass, 68, of Hebron dies in Fairbury hospital after sustaining injuries from the Hebron tornado Saturday night. She was the first casualty as the storm injured at least 69 and damaged about two thirds of the town’s buildings. A timber pierced her window and struck her on the head.
In Kalispell Montana a World War I statue of a doughboy with a steel helmet fife and bayonet was knocked over for the fourth time by a reckless driver. The incident marks a continuing threat to a veteran memorial in the city.
Passing motorists spotted a fire at the Nick Kampa Jr farmhouse two miles south of Becker Minnesota. The blaze started in a pumphouse and spread to the dwelling. The Big Lake Fire Department contained the fire after one wall of the house was destroyed.
Frederick M. Alger Jr. of Grosse Pointe Michigan was nominated by the President for a Belgium posting. The announcement notes Alger’s background and government service as he assumes a role in diplomacy.
Former Michigan Secretary of State and two term official Alger named to succeed Myron Cowan as ambassador to Belgium pending acceptance of resignation. He previously ran for governor last November against Governor G Men nen Williams as a Republican candidate.
St. John's Newfoundland establishes a government loan program to upgrade tourist accommodations. A loan board can grant up to $30,000 to resort operators to raise standards and align with existing attractions.
Cairo reports Premier Naguib's cabinet forbids sales of food, alcohol, building materials to British forces in the Suez Canal zone without supply ministry approval. Egypt cites British attacks since April 1 as the cause while Britain reports casualties on both sides amid ongoing clashes.
Senate remarks condemn former British Prime Minister Attlee for a speech against Eisenhower and the United States. McCarthy cites Attlee claims on Korea talks and U S isolationism, demands apology and explanation from Britain's majority party.
President Eisenhower said he would support a conference of major powers but first requires evidence of Soviet good faith on world peace. He noted no such evidence yet and indicated patience while stressing willingness to pursue peace. He also announced a national radio address on the budget and security.
The Carnegie Public Library celebrates its golden anniversary with a two session open house from 2 to 5 30 and 7 to 9. Librarian Miss Mabel Olson announced special displays by the Garden Club Camera Club travel exhibit by First National Bank and an oil painting exhibit by members of the adult evening class. The children's room offers displays and book lists while refreshments are provided by the Austin Floral Club and organ music fills the air.
Britain informs the United States of new steps to limit shipping to Communist China and North Korea. A May 6 letter from Sir Gladwyn Jebb outlines licensing for British ships that must carry no strategic goods and prevents such cargoes from accessing British fuel sources, aligned with a UN embargo approved nearly two years ago.
Becker County coroner's jury will meet next week to investigate a plane crash at Detroit Lakes airport. Passenger Gaylord Land, 21, was killed when the plane crashed during landing. His brother Allan Lund, 23, was injured and has been discharged from the hospital.
The London firemen's board met at the fire station on Monday and voted to buy a ton and a half truck to serve as a water tank. They cite inadequate water supply at many farm homes in the area.
Frederick W. Krause, 43, was spotted on a second story ledge at police headquarters. Officers chatted with him while two others approached and apprehended him. He was booked on a disorderly conduct charge.
A fire in an incinerator chute at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines sent smoke through the building but caused no injuries or evacuations for the 300 plus patients. Fire crews cleared air with smoke blowers, opened windows, and restored power quickly.
Fire at Hoffman Turkey Farm in Frontenac Minnesota destroyed 4830 poults after spreading through eleven houses. Six buildings burned completely while five were badly charred. Three thousand birds in a nearby field escaped unhurt as the blaze started from an oil heater in a broad house.
