Patrol driver Charles Jackson shot and killed Harry Cole while Cole was fleeing during a confrontation at the police station. Brothers of the slain man incited a mob to lynch Detective McGarvey, who was not the shooter. The crowd grew to thousands, seized shotguns, and threatened further violence as authorities tried to prevent a riot.
War Secretary Taft refuses presidential endorsement if it includes support for Senator Foraker. The Plain Dealer notes Taft aims to eliminate Foraker as both presidential and senatorial figure. Burton reports Taft’s stance from Washington. Meanwhile Adirondack region endures two inches of snow with a mini blizzard and Upstate New York experiences a severe thunderstorm.

Los Angeles begins its festival of flowers celebrating early California days under Mexican rule. Packy McFarland defeats Maurice Sayers in ten rounds at Milwaukee. Brigadier General Orlando B. Willcox, U.S.A. retired former governor of the national soldiers' home in Washington, dies at Coburg aged eighty five.
Edwin S. Tate was found guilty of burglary by a Chicago jury. The jury recommended clemency and a possible sentence to the state penitentiary from one to fourteen years. Tate had been released on parole, and the case relates to a prior burglary at Peoria Board of Education safes. The governor’s paroles may reduce the term to the minimum.

A work train hauling an electric locomotive on the McKinley Electric line collided with a through Interurban car near Edwardsville. The crash occurred as the work train rounded a curve while the car was stopped for trolley repairs, injuring nine passengers, several seriously.
News from Madrid reports Queen Victoria and King Alfonso welcome a healthy prince. Royal ceremony unfolds with cannons, standard hoisted, and public celebrations across Spain and Britain. Baptism planned for Tuesday. infant named Carlos under consideration. King grants pardons to thousands in honor of the birth.
Chicago May 11 a floor collapse at the McCormick branch of the International Harvester works killed one worker and injured about a dozen more as heavy machinery on the fourth floor gave way. The machinery crashed through four floors wrecking the building with over fifty employees inside. New fires and rescue efforts followed as crews battled to reach the injured.
In Flemingsburg Kentucky May 11 a Cincinnati bound engine and two coaches broke through a double decked trestle two miles from town, plunging fifty feet into a creek. Twen are dead two others fatally injured and ten seriously hurt. The dead include Harry Thomas of Cincinnati and an unknown laborer. Engineer Clarence Browning of Flemingsburg and Miss Amelia Snodgrass of Covington were fatally injured.
The Guatemalan affair is settled. Mexico will not demand extradition of General Jose Lima or Colonel Onofrio Bone and will not sever diplomatic relations. Senor Gamboa to be sent to El Salvador. a Mexican consul will handle Guatemala matters. Mexico witholds passports for Senor Giron as a humiliation. State Department to publish the history and official correspondence.
Centralia reports May 1 Thomas Marshall former Salem National Bank cashier and cousin of William J Bryan sits among creditors from the Chicago National Bank collapse. Noted creditors include John R Walsh and Wi Z Aryan with significant sums due.
