The House Judiciary Committee hears a closed briefing detailing events around the June 17, 1972 Watergate break in and supporting facts. Leaders stress no conclusions yet and frame the inquiry as a constitutional duty with additional sessions planned while the Senate Watergate Committee pursues related subpoenas and Haig contempt issues.
President Nixon and Vice President Ford met privately in the Executive Office Building, their first discussion since Watergate disclosures sparked a crisis of confidence. Ford had urged a cautious approach and said edited Nixon transcripts did not show impeachable guilt, while plans for his Buffalo trip were briefly delayed.
President Nixon announced a new $10.3 billion package to subsidize interest rates on government insured mortgages and boost cash for savings and loan institutions. Aims to finance over 200000 more homes as housing starts lag behind 1973 levels.
Keith Fuller deputy general manager of The Associated Press will be the keynote speaker at the Minnesota AP Association spring meeting. Robert King editor of The Minneapolis Star and president of the AP association announced the session will take place in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune building with an afternoon business agenda.
Burlington Northern President Louis W. Menk criticizes Amtrak while noting BN cut passenger service deficits by over 50 million dollars in ten years. He says negotiations with Amtrak are difficult as BN shareholders hear at the annual meeting. The event follows a regional journalism conference and Sigma Delta Chi sessions in Minneapolis.
About 80 protesters briefly disrupted the University of Minnesota Board of Regents meeting during a farewell by President Malcom Moos. They urged a boycott of certain grape and lettuce products.
The Watergate Committee was told a $50,000 cash gift from a supermarket executive to Bebe Rebozo never reached Nixon's re election campaign. In a separate report the House urges recovery of $17.1 million in federal spending linked to Nixon homes and limits future security costs to one private residence.
The $50,000 reward for Patricia Hearst's safe return has increased tips to authorities but FBI agent Charles Bates says none have produced concrete leads on Hearst or the Symbionese Liberation Army, which claims the Feb. 4 kidnapping. In Minnesota, hearings on Northwestern Bell's rate increase begin May 29 before the Public Service Commission. Robert Strauss says President Nixon’s credibility is gone for good with the American people.
Ramsey District Judge Hyam Segell issued an order refusing to hold Minnesota's ballot rotation law unconstitutional. He certified the question as important and doubtful for later Supreme Court review in a suit filed by Secretary of State Arlen Erdahl, who argued Democrats would gain an unfair advantage from being listed first on ballots.
A nationwide Harris poll of 1,503 adults in April shows a majority now believing Nixon will be found to have violated the law, though support for his resignation or impeachment is lower. The survey compares prior months and follows the release of Watergate transcripts.

Sen. Schweiker of Pennsylvania joins Republicans calling for Nixon to resign over Watergate transcripts and moral concerns. Senate GOP leaders Brooke and Buckley had already urged resignation while pressure builds in the House as Judiciary Committee opens impeachment hearings.
