Los Angeles May 8 Governor James N Gillette said he will not mobilize the state militia to quell San Francisco riots until civil authorities request help or he is sure no other option remains. He will act immediately if killings continue and police fail to stop them. He awaits advice from Adjutant General Louck and could deploy troops or seek federal assistance if the situation worsens.
Detectives Crim and Kuhfers uncovered a vast German lottery operation in Cincinnati. Richard Berger a saloonist at 1380 Central Avenue was arrested for selling tickets. Authorities estimate between 390 000 and 500 000 tickets tied to the scheme.
Two masked youths stopped the North Coast Limited near Welch's Spur and killed Engineer James Clow and wounded Fireman James Sullivan. A bystander, William Crawford, 19, arrested near Woodville, provided details. Rangers tracked the suspects but traces faded. a telescope grip with blasting powder was found on the locomotive.

London May 8 government presents its Irish bill to the house of commons to meet demands for home rule. Birrell explains a limited self government with an eight‑department council, crown control of five departments including the constabulary, and a charter to appoint the council. Unionists see it as step toward home rule while Radicals and Irish members condemn its concessions. A Nationalist convention in Dublin May 21–22 will consider the measure and guide Irish MPs.

She was once married to James Stewart Laird and later to Wallace Widdicombe who resides at the Longacre hotel. A note found requests publication of many musical works and cites severe headaches from marital troubles.

Trvine I Lenroot of Superior withdraws from the Wisconsin senatorial race by letter to the Republican caucus. Despite the withdrawal, many supporters continued to vote for him on three ballots after the announcement. Hudnall joined Hatten and Peterson shifted to Stephenson. Lenroot aims to back a progressive wing candidate and frees supporters to choose camps.
Mrs Concetta Mondella aged 36 wife of a city employee was fatally shot in front of her Cherry Street home as she left to visit neighbors.
