Oregon land fraud cases, long and complex, reached an unexpected conclusion as prosecutors and defense attorneys disputed key claims. The proceedings highlighted disputed titles and questioned land grants, with jurors weighing the evidence amid a tight timetable.
Portland May 6 Pleas of guilty ended the U S land fraud case against Charles Cunningham and others arraigned in federal court. Cunningham received a 5000 dollar fine while the others were fined 100 dollars each. no imprisonment. Shackelford pleaded not guilty and Kate ames was discharged for want of probable cause. Convictions stem from testimony in the Thomson receiver case in La Grange Oregon last fall.
In Rome on May 6 the chamber of deputies heard a parliamentary inquiry into Signor Nasi former Minister of Public Instruction. The inquiry found Nasi guilty of misappropriation of large sums and classification of funds, amid a dramatic session.
The law courts urged the chamber to permit action against Nasi and his arrest, but discussion was postponed until Saturday. News of his guilt spread, and the former minister, believing all to be lost, fled.
The Moffly reorganization committee of stockholders of the Consolidated Lake Superior company confirms the plan dated October 20, 1903. Unpaid assessments must be settled by May 17, with 50 percent of underwriting due the same day. The Canadian Improvement Company underwrites and guarantees a cash working capital of $1,000,000 for the new firm, with Soo operations expected to resume around June 1.

Washington May 6 The department of agriculture reports the horse malady in Iowa is traceable to horses imported from Europe. The disease known as coit is parasitical. Officials consider barring further imports of horses from France to prevent spread.
Frank Lewandowski was found guilty of murdering his wife on Thursday and sentenced to a term of years. He wounded himself during the crime and narrowly escaped death.
London May 6. The Mail says Russia canceled coal contracts for the Far East bound Baltic fleet and its authorities fear loss of Yalu army baggage. Berlin dispatches claim transports move barely five miles a day and Japanese forces may seize Fenghuancheng stores.
The Yalu disaster impact on China is watched with keen interest. The Russian government seems satisfied for the moment as Paul Lessar reports daily to the foreign office from Peking. The dispatches contain nothing disquieting.
From St. Petersburg on May 6 General Kuropatkin telegrammed the Russian Red Cross society requesting the supply of 2,000 additional beds for the hospitals operating at the front. The move aims to improve battlefield medical capacity as Russian forces contend with mounting strain.
