A memorandum of agreement to settle the strike was presented and accepted after a 1 p.m. special meeting of the Longshoremen's union. The carriers and union representatives then met again and signed the agreement.
Washington May 6 dispatch reports General Chaffee confirming a successful campaign against Sultan Bayan one of Moro chiefs. Baldwin led a hand to hand assault through four ditch lines, with Bayan surrendering and leaders killed or captured. Casualties included 1 officer and 7 enlisted dead and 4 officers and 87 enlisted wounded.
At Lucena Tayabas province a board of inquiry investigates Major Cornelius Gardener governor's charges. Colonel Theodore J. Wint presides. witnesses pending. Major Edwin F. Glenn heads to Catbalogan to face court martial. General Frederick D. Grant to preside. Inspector Brown reports seizure of six cannon and 200 iron cannon balls in Marinduque.
In Manila on May 5 the demurrers in the Freedom editor’s sedition case were heard. Defense contends the remarks were not seditious or libelous while Attorney General Wilfley argues the case must be tried under commission laws, not other authorities. The defense says the commission cannot find a reputable Manila paper to back it and laments the press rejection.
The House and Senate held a public memorial for Amos J. Cummings of New York in the Capitol. Delegations and thousands gathered, with floral tributes and a program of hymns prayers and addresses before the remains were taken to New York.
The Duluth longshoremen strike ends after four days of talks between the Lake Carriers' Association and the Longshoremen's Union. Workers will earn 52 to 55 cents per hour depending on lumber shipment rates, with more steady work guaranteed by regulated lumber boat arrivals.
President-elect Estrada Palma, fatigued after three days of celebrations in Santiago de Cuba, left for Santa Cruz and will visit Cienfuegos Matanzas and Havana arriving May 11. He thanked Americans for Cuba’s freedom and accepted the American club presidency, saying he will avoid politics and return to the United States.
New York May 5 The port saw a peak last week with 25 120 immigrants arriving from European ports. For the four months ending April 30 totals reached 178 604, well above previous years, with January 18 243 February 29 519 March 57 175 and April 73 667. The 1902 start stands out with last year totaling 438 638 arrivals.
Seattle August Mayor warned by Governor Mc Bride that he will use his influence to block the Jeffries Fitzsimmons bout in Washington. The governor informed a businessmen committee that he would prevent the event from taking place in the state.
Seoul reports state that Japan presses the Korean government for compensation for Japanese subjects killed in recent years on the peninsula.
In Los Angeles on May 6 Dr Er W Aldrich of Chicago was killed and City Detective Hawley wounded during a confrontation as officers attempted to serve extradition papers. Aldrich shot Hawley and then fatally shot himself after locking in his private office.
The Northwestern Telephone Exchange Company describes a nationwide toll line program with over 30,000 subscribers and 2,000 toll stations. It notes investments across the Northwest and additional facilities through connections with more than one hundred independent companies, promising unmatched service.
A nationwide miners strike looms as 147 000 anthracite workers refuse concessions after failed talks in New York. Executive committee to meet in Scranton, Pa. next Wednesday to decide on strike action, with possible soft coal sympathy shutdowns. President Mitchell says no more talks and Hanna may still intervene.
A. F. Butterfield and Robert Haydon overpowered a sentry at Fort Sheridan, bound gagged him, and forced him to guide them toward Highland Park before releasing him. The incident caused a major search by about 100 soldiers, but the men were not recaptured. Sentry George Smith of the Ninth Battery was the attacked guard. Butterfield and Haydon had been sentenced to the guardhouse for desertion.
A skiff with four adults and a child overturned on May 5 in the river at West Newton Pennsylvania. Mrs. Fred Landsparger and their 4 year old son died. Also in the boat were Mr. Landsparger Mrs. Landsparger Miss Maggie Herrington and Fred Bendig. Landsparger aided Miss Herrington to shore believing she was his wife but risked himself to rescue the drowning wife and child who sank while clinging together.
Five thousand people packed a Broome street hall to bid farewell to anarchist Johann Most as police arrest Most and editor William McQueen during a clash that erupted when detectives moved to seize the speakers. Reserves were called as the crowd grew threatening.
In Peking on May 5 United States Minister Conger protested Prince Ching the head of the office about expelling Chinese Christians from a new school run by Yuan Shikai the Governor of Chihli. Conger cites treaty promises against discrimination and warns it harms China’s faith in honoring obligations.
Reports from Jacmel say Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic fell to insurgent forces. President Jiminez is said to have taken refuge in the French consulate as telegraph lines remain down and news comes with difficulty.
Cairo reports a major fire at Mit Gamr on the Damietta branch of the Nile burning from Thursday afternoon to Saturday night. Many residents perished in their flimsy wooden dwellings while attempting to save belongings. One hundred bodies recovered and eighty seriously injured.
