On May 4 Chicago faced prolonged rioting with severe street clashes between workers, guards, and strike supporters. Business leaders urged Governor Deneen to deploy state troops while Mayor Dunne and Chief O Neill resisted outside assistance. Dozens were wounded as guards and wagon crews faced attacks during the day.
St Petersburg reports confirm Russian cruisers have left Vladivostok as war circles expect Oyama to move on Vladivostok to cut Admiral Rozhestvensky from the fleet. Nebogatoff must coal before heading to Hainan, with no joint action before May 9. Tokyo port fogs and May 2 sighting of the Second Pacific squadron at Port Deit are noted.
President James W. Alexander of the Equitable Life Assurance society resigns as trustee of the majority stock left by the late Henry B. Hyde. The move follows James H. Hyde’s charge that he had been disloyal to his trust.
New York May 4 jury fails to reach a verdict in the Nan Patterson case after twelve hours deliberation over one day, a majority favoring acquittal but no agreement. Patterson collapses after the discharge and may be released if the indictment is quashed or a new trial is not pursued.
The bodies of Robert Rushton Shaw, an Englishman once from Burnley who inherited a fortune, and his wife Elizabeth, whom he wed in the United States about five years ago, were found in a field. Both had been shot and a revolver lay beside them, with investigators treating it as a double death by own action.
Washington May 4 During a meeting Cardinal Gibbons presided with Archbishops Ireland and Keane Monsignor O Connell the rector and Michael Jenkins and Charles Bonaparte the new treasurer. The university recovered over $200000 from Waggaman securities and about $100000 on other investments, improving the finances more than expected.
In Mankato Minnesota on May 4 the prosecution rested in the Koch murder case. Asa P Brooks the New Ulm newspaper man who was the sole witness was not called by the state and Judge Cray ruled that if Brooks were to be called he must be present.
Special Officer Peter F E Raverty died after being shot by two burglars in Brennan Lumber Co on Kittson street while answering a telephone call. A revolver duel with Officer Puglasa followed. the robbers fled after failing to loot the safe. Suspects James R Eagan and Harry Laramie later detained at Hastings. Raverty was married and died at the city hospital.
A midnight blaze at the Fifth Avenue West wholesale district hotel in Duluth killed three and left two men missing. Firemen faced gale winds as crews recovered two bodies, identified as John Myes and an unknown man. The wooden hotel sustained total destruction.
Reports from European Russia describe unrest in several cities. Militopol saw a mob burn part of the town after hours of carnival. Nizhni Novgorod reported a clash between soldiers and crowds with fatalities and injuries. Embassies estimate Warsaw deaths at forty to fifty and wounded ranging from sixty to two hundred.
A night storm at Spirit Lake Iowa on May 4 injured two people, one of whom died, and damaged property estimated at 25 000 dollars.
