A fire alarm at Harburger, Homan & Co. cigar factory on Tenth Street and Washington Avenue triggered a deadly crush as thousands escaped from a six story building. Eight girls died, three were fatally injured, and more than twenty were seriously hurt amid stampeding stairwells and jumping from windows. The incident stemmed from a deaf janitor's accident with an elevator shaft. 1200 workers were present, many of them young women.
In Washington on May 1 the president walked early and visited Senator Hanna's home. The discussion centered on southern post office appointments with Postmaster General Payne consulted by telephone about upcoming vacancies and the men filling them and potential aspirants considered.

Cape Town May 1 Princess Rad ziwill on trial before the supreme court for forging notes claimed to be endorsed by Cecil Rhodes. She was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to two years in the house of correction. The chief justice noted her birth education and social position and condemned attempts to implicate Mrs Schultz and a bribed post office boy linked to a cablegram from B A Hawksley.
Washington report says experts considering a currency plan will advise Congress to establish a system modeled on fractional notes used in Canada Britain Germany and France. The plan envisions detachable coupon books available through post offices or rural free delivery carriers in amounts from 5 cents to 2 dollars.
Town Marshal Sam B. Weaver was shot and killed by Dr. W. Allen in England Arkansas. Bystander Arthur ng suffered a broken right arm from a stray shot. Dr. Allen was wounded in the hip and arrested years earlier after a separate incident. Witnesses say the men confronted, Allen drew a pistol and Weaver died at the scene.

Washington May 1 Senator Penrose introduced a bill to readjust under the eight hour law the accounts of letter carriers laborers mechanics and all others employed by the government since 1868 except clerical workers with the aim of paying them for all time worked in excess of eight hours.
The Northwestern Telephone Exchange announces vast investments in toll lines across the Northwest to meet all demands. The plant, plus supplementary facilities from over a hundred independent companies, promises a service unequalled in the country.
May Day strikes spread to Pittsburg Buffalo and Cincinnati as about 12 000 workers halt duties demanding eight-hour days and higher wages. Iron carpenters electricians plumbers and other trades join the walkout while some contractors and unions sign wage scales.
About 600 St Paul workers at risk of job loss as the American Federation of Labor endorses a strike. Steamfitters helpers and carpenters abstain from daytime work while hoisting engineers threaten to join. Iron molders demand 40 cent daily wage increase to 3.15, leather workers seek 10 percent higher pay for piecework. The walkout could start Saturday noon if demands remain unmet.
New York May 1 President Mitchell said the conference with anthracite operators and United Mine Workers adjourned for good. Delegates will report to the National Civic Federation when it meets. Operators said the committee report could be shared only with the Civic Federation and not to others until that body meets.
Providence reported a new twist in the American Woolen company strike as yard making departments in the Olneyville mills were ordered closed gradually. More than 1,200 workers will be sent home late. The strike ripple has reduced yarn demand with mills in other cities closing too. The total affected is estimated at 20 000 workers.
Berlin May 1 Advance sheets from Prof Pehringer's forthcoming book on tuberculosis in cattle summarize six years of work at Marburg with Dr Ruappet and Dr Roemer. Behring asserts human and bovine bacilli are identical species and differences arise from host adaptation. He says cattle can be infected with human virus, causing fatal disease, and cites a young-cattle vaccination method as his major discovery now used on Marburg farms, noted during his Nobel prize speech in Stockholm.
In Louisville two pool room owners and local police suspect wire tappers operated in city rooms staging bets on San Francisco races. One room reportedly lost 860 dollars while another lost 700 as bets on Flush of Gold and Maraschino were mishandled amid wagering refusals and verification delays.
Fire destroyed one of the first sets of barracks at Fort Meade South Dakota as flames started in the kitchen at reveille. Local firemen, aided by Sturgis, saved equipment while the logs and several small adjoining structures were total losses. The one story frame buildings housed the regiment.
