Soviet Cosmonauts 10 Minute Space Walk Puts Voskhod 2 in Orbit

Two cosmonauts launched into orbit aboard Voskhod 2 as Alexei Leonov exited the capsule for a 10 minute space walk. He floated tethered by a life line while Pavel Belyayev remained inside the craft. Tass reported all systems normal and the crew in good condition.

Soviet Voskhon-2 flight shows pilot in high orbit

Moscow television viewers watched a close up of Col Pavel Belyaев, pilot of Voskhon-2, during a 16 orbit flight. Officials said after the first orbit Lt. Col Alexei Leonov exited the craft for 10 minutes following the launch around 10 am Moscow time. Voskhon-2 reportedly flew in the highest orbit of any manned spacecraft.

Voting Rights Act urged to curb Negro disenfranchisement

Attorney General Katzenbach told a House subcommittee the courts have failed to protect Negro voting rights and urged immediate action on a federal bill. The measure would outlaw discriminatory tests and devices in states with histories of voting barriers and permit federal examiners to register voters denied rights. He cited Dallas County Alabama as an example of intimidation and delay.

Ham Operator Relays Help for Seven Stalled Cars

An amateur radio operator aided seven motorists stranded on Highway 55 between Paynesville and Eden Valley. Carl Reed of Fargo used a car radio to broadcast for assistance. a ham in Grand Haven relayed the call to Meeker County sheriff in Litchfield as temperatures dropped to near zero. Snowplows from Paynesville and Eden Valley worked to reach the line, with snowmobiles considered if needed.

Federal Judge Clears Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March

A federal judge ruled that a 50 mile march from Selma to Montgomery may proceed and ordered Alabama officials to provide protection for demonstrators. Judge Frank M. Johnson Jr. barred interference by state and county authorities and affirmed the right to march peacefully for voting rights.

Visibility Zero in Austin Responds to Blowing Snow

Blowing snow limits visibility around Austin with more than five inches of snowfall already reported and more expected. The weatherman predicts little improvement until noon Friday as winds moderate. The Highway Department urges travel only for emergencies since trunk highways are impassable due to blowing snow.

Blizzard Strands Motorists as North Wind Hits Minnesota

King Winter and his North Wind create the worst blizzard of the year, dropping over 5 inches of snow with 30 to 40 mph winds, drifts up to 4 feet and a near 30 foot drift between Austin and Albert Lea. Travel is halted, visibility is zero, and mail is not being delivered. Road closures include Interstate 90 and Highways 218 and 16, with only Highway 56 to Adams passable in emergencies. City and county crews race to clear streets as crews report zero visibility and shortages of tow trucks.

Missing Slayton School Bus With Children Sought

A school bus carrying six or seven children and the driver was missing near Slayton Minnesota about 24 hours after departure while returning from school. Snow drifts hindered search efforts and several farms in the area lacked telephones. A second Slayton bus had been missing briefly but later reached a farm with the children and driver staying overnight.

Emigre widow in Detroit sets fire to protest arms race

82-year-old Alice Herz, who fled Nazi Germany in 1933, self immolated on a Detroit street corner. She suffered second and third degree burns to her neck, face and head and remained in critical but potentially survivable condition at Receiving Hospital. Meanwhile Seattle reports the U S plans a nuclear test in Alaska on Amchitka Island to study quake versus underground blast signatures.

NASA to Pick 10 to 20 Scientist Astronauts This Summer

NASA plans to select 10 to 20 scientists for a year of astronaut flight training this summer. Dr. Hugh L. Dryden, deputy administrator, said the pool will come from more than 900 applicants at a meeting of the American Astronautical Society.

Region One Basketball Finals Scheduled for Saturday

Ray Wescott announced the Region One finals will be held Saturday night after a strong recommendation from the State High School League. The Austin-Preston elimination game is set for Friday night if weather permits, with the final on Saturday instead of Monday.
