Vanguard Puts 2nd Satellite Into Orbit Onward Orbit Plans

Washington reports Dr. John P. Hagen director of Project Vanguard said the new earth satellite should stay aloft 5 to 10 years and that orbiting a satellite toward the moon is a logical next step. He noted seven more Vanguard tests with small satellites and reusable stages for future space ventures.

Weekend Toll Rises With Three Minnesota Traffic Deaths

The Associated Press reports three weekend fatalities raise Minnesota’s total this year to 95, with victims including Paul Martin of Duluth, 33, who died in a high way crash near the Highways 53 and 33 junction. A rural Lewisville woman, 46, died in Sleepy Eye when her car skidded on a snowy Highway 4, injuring her 9-year-old daughter. A Madison, Minnesota man, 23, died after his car left a road near Montevideo, possibly due to fatigue.

Vanguard satellite signals detected near Cape Canaveral

Officials at Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory reported Vanguard appears to be in a high orbit with a 133 minute period. In California a tracking station heard the signal for five minutes after launch. Explorer I was heard 27 minutes earlier. A RCA network tone from the Navy satellite was broadcast in Riverhead New York after liftoff.

Eau Claire Utensil Firm Lays Off 100 Workers

National Presto Industries of Eau Claire announced a layoff of 100 workers for an indefinite period due to a production cut back. The firm employed 1,265 production staff at February end and had recently closed Lake Side Aluminum of Menomonie laying off about 200 persons.

Body of Charles G. Ralph Found on Tracks Near Minneapolis

Charles G. Ralph age 67 was found on railroad tracks fifteen minutes after a train passed on Saturday in Minneapolis. No further details on cause or investigation were provided.

Contests to enliven city primaries Tuesday

City voters face a three way mayoral race and ward contests as polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. In the First Ward candidates Walter Klement Rudy Nelson and Eldon Al Johnson vie for two April 1 general election slots. The Third Ward hosts four candidates George Weiss Roger Svejkowski Gene Buland and Frank Schroeder with top two advancing. Second Ward features only the mayoralty race with no alderman primary. later April 1 elects an alderman at large between Ernest Diederich and Don Kinney.

Vandals Strike Neveln School and Local Home

Austin police report vandalism at Neveln School with a broken window four trashed classrooms scattered popcorn and books torn pages from a book damaged mirrors and lockers. A house at 2303 Lincoln Parkway suffered repeated breakage tar damage and another broken thermopane window likely involving two boys on English bicycles.

Indonesia Claims Recapture of City

The Indonesian army said insurgents were driven from the main part of Medan in Sumatra, with government forces regaining control of the airfield and harbor. Rebels reported capturing Medan earlier, led by Maj. Boyke Navin Golan, as Sukarno ordered reinforcements amid growing fears the revolt could spread.

Region Bank Debits Show 4 Percent Activity Rise

The 9th Federal Reserve district reports a 4 percent year over year rise in bank debits for January and February 1958, totaling $8,490,820,000 versus $8,148,907,090 the previous year. The district covers Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Upper Michigan and northwestern Wisconsin. Bank debits reflect checks drawn against deposits and payments for goods and services.
