A Berlin dispatch from Cuxhaven reports the loss of thirty four Aves by the foundering of two ships the German cargo steamer the George Wottern and a trawler during a heavy gale in the North Sea. It states no further details have been received but believes those drowned were all aboard both vessels.
Three residents perished in a Bushwick avenue tenement fire and a fourth victim died in a home fire. One man was mortally injured as smoke and flames trapped occupants. A tenant discovered the tenement blaze and within minutes it roared up stairs and toward the air shaft. Mrs. Ida Bingalli and her two children, Peter Banattro, and Mrs. Tischler among the dead or injured in the separate blaze.
A late evening fire broke out under a platform in the Auditorium during a revival in Aberdeen on March 11. About 2,000 people were in attendance as Rev. R. E. Johnson and accompanying ministers led safe exit while flames consumed the rear of the platform. firemen battled the blaze for an hour with no injuries.
Washington March 11 marked improvement as Archie Roosevelt shows signs of recovery from diphtheria. Surgeon General Rixey says Archie is practically out of danger and improving. the White House reports a hopeful condition and the president plans continued care by others.
The opinion suggests no complications and a quick return to health for Archie, indicating he would soon be a well boy again.
Chairman Knapp of the Interstate Commerce Commission says testimony in the Harriman lines case is closed for now. The commission may seek a court order to compel Harriman to answer unanswered questions. Harriman plans a conference with President Roosevelt next Thursday as April 4 arguments proceed regarding parallel Union Pacific and Southern Pacific lines.
A fire in Mobile on Dauphin Street shortly before 1 am damaged a three story cafe building and two more nearby structures near St Andrews hotel. Flames spread to a rear building before being checked. Loss estimated at 50 090 dollars with minor damage to adjacent properties.
Michael Bower a prosperous farmer and his ten year old daughter Isabel were instantly killed at a rail crossing in Lancaster New York. Bower’s thirteen year old daughter Rose died later from injuries. A Lackawanna passenger train was detoured due to a minor wreck and the crossing watchman failed to warn power.
In El Paso on March 11 five women bullfighters at Juarez Plaza del Torres were injured as bulls gored or tossed them. Only one Senorita Herrera suffered serious injuries though not fatal. The event drew five thousand spectators.
A man carrying a card with the name Joseph W. Willard of St Paul Minnesota was found dead on the Union Pacific tracks near Lexington Nebraska after falling from an eastbound train during the night. Coroner Birkhofer took charge of the body.
Bucharest reports farm laborers in the Hoto sani district becoming aggressive and threatening, with incidents of plundering estates and farms signaling possible wide scale agitation.
Beaverdam Wis March 11 Rescoe P Miller 42 a former convict released for good behavior shot and killed his divorced wife at the home, attempted to kill his daughter and then killed his stepmother before killing himself in their house. He had quarrels over property since his father died a year ago leaving him with nothing. The daughter survived.
Richard Kennedy Jr., age twenty, struck his father with a baseball bat during a quarrel in Solon Ohio. The fatal blow killed the father instantly. Kennedy surrendered to police after the incident.
