House Won't Return February Pay Raise for Congress

The House rejected an amendment to remove a $12,900 pay raise for members, approving the $928.8 million legislative appropriation for fiscal 1978. The vote was 251 to 161, sending the bill to the Senate where opposition is limited. The raise raises salaries from $44,600 to $57,500 and follows a new practice ensuring future raises are voted on.

Jewelry theft ties to Congdon murder case in Duluth

Police linked robbery to the killing of Elisabeth Congdon and nurse Velma Pietila as more than $3,000 in jewelry disappeared from the Congdon mansion. Autopsies showed Congdon died of a heart attack after pillow smothering. Pietila died from head injuries with an eight inch candlestick. A smudged fingerprint on the candlestick was not confirmed useful. A titled mystery movie set at the mansion will be shown in Duluth July 8 at Norshor Theater. The theft list includes a $2,000 platinum ring with sapphires and diamonds, a yellow gold watch, bracelets, a locket, a pearl necklace, earrings, a charm bracelet, and a Tiffany pin.
