At Lodz Russian troops stormed barricades as strikers closed factories and shops. About fifty people were killed and around two hundred wounded amid ongoing rifle and revolver fire. Martial law looms as panic spreads and liquor stores and lamps are looted. Washington notes Takahira returned from New England with guarded remarks on armistice prospects.
Reports from Lodz and Warsaw describe fierce street fighting between military units and striking workers, with up to fifty dead and many wounded as public life halts. Russian dispatches say streets are controlled by troops and mob, and fears of further violence rise while authorities deny plans for Russification.
The War Department cabled that Admiral Enquist may embark his sick and wounded officers and men on a Russian hospital ship upon giving parole not to engage in hostilities. They may also bring material from Shanghai for ship repairs such as cordage sailcloth waste and oil, while vessels remain interned.
In St Petersburg on June 24 preparations for Moscow district mobilization are finished. A medical exam will assess 48,000 men. 20,000 will be chosen for reserve battalions rather than frontline service in the Far East.
St. Petersburg report says the Finance Ministry plans an internal loan of 100 million dollars to be floated next fall. Finance Minister Kokov soff expresses confidence in no major difficulties in issuing the loan.
London reports the French government refused to transmit a Paris news agency telegram claiming Premier Rouvier would adopt a firmer stance toward Germany with English backing. The note on the Moroccan conference was delivered to Berlin amid unresolved points and tense public mood in France.
In Milwaukee on June 14 the Modern Woodmen of America selected Peoria Illinois as the site for the next head camp gathering after a close vote 239 for Peoria 225 for Buffalo 7 for Detroit with 236 needed. Per capita tax remains one dollar and official salaries stay unchanged. The day featured an automobile flower parade and carnival pageant.
Marblehead Mass June 24 Charles T Estabrook a bookkeeper died after a car backed over the dock edge at the Boston Yacht Club house and toppled to the beach fifteen feet below. Three others were injured in the accident. Estabrook was crushed beneath the steering wheel in the plunge.
In Manitowoc Wisconsin on June 24 Carla Huebner twelve daughter of Mr and Mrs William Huebner living north of the city died after stepping on a coiled non venomous snake. Her death resulted from fright not a bite.
Minneapolis report says Mrs. Jessie Lacey of 1714 Linden Avenue took fifteen grains of strychnine at 8 p m thinking they were headache powders. She died within five minutes after the error was realized, and her sister summoned a physician who arrived too late.
In Christiania June 24 Norwegians in the United States back petitions to President Roosevelt for recognizing Norway’s independence. Stockholm fears King Oscars conciliatory peace policy could be overturned by the riksdag though insiders expect the majority to stay the course. Premier Ramstedt has offered to resign but is urged to withdraw by the king and cabinet.
In Chicago on June 24 two men robbed passengers on a Chicago Milwaukee electric car as it passed Winnetka. They stopped the car on Winnetka Avenue, searched passengers and the motorman and conductor, took about $65 in cash and the conductor’s money, plus a gold watch from the motorman, then fled in a waiting buggy.
In St Paul on June 24 the independent oil dealers won a ruling against railways and the Standard Oil Co that kerosene and gasoline oil shipped in less than carload lots be classified as fourth class freight. The Bartles Oil Co suit argues annual savings of about $200,000 for Minnesota oil consumers.
Springfield Alabama June 24 Supreme court affirms Cook county circuit court ruling awarding Samuel C G Prindle two thousand dollars damages in 1901 for libelous article published in a Dowie edited paper against John Alexander Nowie.
Lebanon Ind June 24 Judge Stephen Neale author of the Fourteenth amendment to the United States Constitution died at his home surrounded by relatives after several months illness.
London June 24 Whitelaw Reid American ambassador appeared publicly at a London Pilgrim Society dinner. Lord Roberts proposed to Edward VII and Roosevelt. Premier Babour toasted the guest. Reid praised US England friendship and received an enthusiastic reception from prominent Britons.
Four American yachts dominate classes in Kiel regatta with Swan leading early but finishing 4 minutes 45 seconds ahead of Thyra. Capri places third. Orion loses to Allsa by 1 minute 16 seconds. Meteor III beats Hamburg by over 3 minutes. Navahoe tops Comet by 31 minutes. Suzanne narrowly defeats Clara.
Benjamin H. Tallmadse was arrested in Rosewell New Mexico on a charge of suborning perjury. He posted a $5000 bond before U S Land Commissioner Carl Snyder after a complaint by Grosvenor Clarkson government special agent. The case signals a broader probe into alleged fraud in land entries in the artesian belt of New Mexico.
In Sandstone Minnesota on June 24 volunteers scour the countryside from Partridge to Sandstone for Martin Benson’s two and a half year old son who wandered from home Thursday afternoon. Fears persist the child was taken by wildlife or abducted with wolves or bears common east of the area.
In Petoskey Michigan on June 24 Alma Kurcher Edna Van Ambrey and Gladys Howe perished when a boat on Pine Lake leaked and sank. Two men in the party were rescued and a pondside search is planned.
Frank Campbell, member of the Kansas City Kansas school board, was found guilty by a district court jury of accepting a bribe. The penalty for the offense ranges from one to five years.
Topeka labor official T B Gerow issued a Friday call for 2000 more harvest hands as wheat ripens and cannot be harvested without help. The need is urgent to prevent crop loss.
