South Vietnamese halt northern attack near Hue
North Vietnamese armor and infantry hit the northern defense line above Hue at dawn but the main thrust was checked with U S jets. Reports say 16 armored vehicles were knocked out near the My Chanh River, while U S jets destroyed three 130 mm guns west of My Chanh. In Saigon's overall tally, six Vietnamese tanks crossed the river and shelling continued on the ground as the Viet Cong said it released hundreds of captured South Vietnamese troops. On the southern front, six Americans were killed since Monday in the effort to reopen Highway 13 to An Loc, with two advisers and four helicopter crews among the dead. Two U S helicopter gunships were shot down, one on Wednesday and another on Tuesday.
