Minnesota River flood storms hit Marshall area again

Heavy rains of three inches in three hours swamped Marshall and nearby towns. The Redwood River rose, flooding business districts and homes as Minnesota River levels rise toward a 23 foot crest. Authorities warned of continuing flooding into the weekend with roads and dikes under watch.

Storm Ravages Kansas City Sparking Injuries

A midnight thunderstorm in Kansas City produced winds up to 100 miles per hour. Scattered damage reported across the metro area. Two people were injured.

Fargo Tornado Damage Spreads Across City

A Red Cross survey shows 329 homes destroyed and 1,135 damaged in Fargo’s tornado with 10 dead and over 80 injured. The disaster hit residential areas, destroying churches, schools, and 15 businesses while autos were damaged and residents filled shelters. Government aid plans and a disaster declaration were underway as state officials promised federal help.

Fargo N D Tornado Disaster Declared Major Area

President Eisenhower designated Fargo North Dakota a major disaster area after a tornado killed ten and wounded more than eighty. Nearly 1,500 homes were destroyed or damaged as the storm swept into a Fargo residential area Friday night. The White House allocated federal Civil Defense funds to aid state and local efforts and informed Gov. Davis by telegram.

Plane Crashes on Training Flight Near Frederick

A Capital Airlines twin engine DC3 crashed on a training flight between Washington and Frederick Maryland. Two people were killed and a third believed dead. The aircraft went down in a Clarkburg area backyard along Maryland Route 355 after departing from Washington National Airport at 6 25 am. No cause is known and the three aboard were Capital employees.

Four Minnesota juveniles held after Lake Superior gun theft

Four Minneapolis youths including a 14 year old girl were captured after illegal shooting on Lake Superior shore. Police found a car loaded with 13 pistols shotguns and rifles plus ammo and tied the weapons to thefts in the Minneapolis and Balsam Lake areas. The 17 year old said he was AWOL from a Minnesota Youth Conservation Camp. They had been living in motels after leaving Minneapolis.

U.S. to Cut Forces in Japan in Major Drawdown

President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Kishi announce the withdrawal of about 30 000 U.S. ground combat troops from Japan starting in July with a substantial force reduction within a year. The plan includes disarmament steps and revises the 1951 mutual security pact, while Japan faces troop spending losses and civilian job impacts.

Two Die in Car Train Collision at Clitherall Crossing

In Clitherall Minnesota a car struck by a train at a crossing fatally injured Emil Peterson aged 61 from near Clitherall and Magnus Anderson about 60 visiting from Saskatchewan Canada. Anderson died at about 10 p.m. en route to Fergus Falls hospital. The fatal crash raises Minnesota's traffic toll to 270.

Ten coal miners died in a night explosion at the Akabira mine 50 miles northeast of Sapporo. One miner was seriously injured, officials said.

Johannes Stark, 83, Nobel Prize in Physics winner for spectral analysis of electromagnetic fields, died in Traunstein on Friday after a heart attack. He was honored for his 1919 award and contributions to physics.

Brandy-Drinking Parrot Delays City Building Plans

In Victoria B C Mike a parrot favors brandy over crackers and blocks a prime hotel or apartment site for six years. Owner Doug Abrams bought the ground four years ago and will lease the Wilson mansion to Mike the bird and its two companion parrots until the bird dies. Maid Wah Mong earned the funds to fund the daily brandy ration of one ounce. Abrams has never seen Mike only heard him squawk.

Gen Lauris Norstad testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee that United States would face disaster if it renounced status of forces agreements guiding foreign trials of GIs off base. He said sovereignty permits foreign courts to try offenses within their territory and praised foreign tribunals for fairness and lighter sentences.
