Steel imports worsen U.S. balance of payments says U.S. Steel official
Edward C. Logelin of U S Steel told Twin Cities Rotarians that steel imports outweigh exports and helped create a large deficit, wiping out about 5,000 steel marketing jobs. He noted the deficit near 1.1 billion dollars after including freight and government-export adjustments, amounting to about one third of 1967’s balance of payments gap.

Wage gap sparks tension in U.S. steel industry pull
Logelin argues Japan holds a $40 per ton labor cost edge over U.S. steel, a gap not offset by raw materials or plant costs. He notes much imported steel enters via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, stressing that Minnesota taconite pellet output hinges on a healthy steel market in Duluth and St. Paul.
