Chamberlain Liberals Win Narrow Victory in Commons
In London the Liberal motion to adjourn was defeated 252 to 132 as Campbell Bannerman sought more light on the tariff issue. The debate solidified Chamberlain’s gains, pushed Balfour toward a hard line, and unsettled the government’s position on a colonial retaliatory policy with New South Wales. Rumors of cabinet resignations circulated, but no changes were confirmed. The government’s precarious stance suggests an early appeal to the country on the preferential tariff debate.
