Reminiscences of Chauncy Leverich and Austin’s early days
The narrative recalls Chauncy Leverich who chose Austin’s site in 1854, advertising and enterprise shaping the town while his coercive methods estranged neighbors. It covers his sale of interests after a family dispute over a dress, early settlers’ hardships, lack of professionals, and a winter tale of Thomas Smith seeking shelter and warmth after a frozen night. It also notes rival paper towns such as Two Rivers, Cedar City, Otranto, Lansing, Madison, and Troy that faded as Austin persisted.

Oratorio Josiah Presented by Austin Choral Union
The Austin Choral Union under Prof. E. F. Steffens staged Oratorio Josiah at Congregational Church on Wednesday evening before a large audience. Ten choruses and twenty solos and recitatives filled two parts with Mrs. Hormel Pooler Lewis Ornsley Anderson Ticknor Wilbour Gleason among soloists. Rehmann played piano and Tichy conducted. The tenor section was light due to few qualified singers, but overall chorus work reflected credit on Steffens who prepared the piece. it marked Austin’s first sacred oratorio and hopes for more in the future. The group had trained about seventeen weeks and the result pleased many.
