Washington Chosen as Seat for Russia Japan Peace Talks

Washington was selected to host the peace conference between Russia and Japan after Chefoo and Paris were rejected. President Roosevelt proposed The Hague but Japan and Russia agreed on Washington, with dates likely in mid to late summer and a protocol to be drafted beforehand.

High Admiral of Russian Navy Steps Down

In St Petersburg on June 16 Grand Duke Alexis the high admiral and uncle to the emperor and Admiral Avellan head of the Admiralty resigned. An imperial rescript soon afterward stripped the grand duke of supreme navy direction he had held since the emperor's father Kaaucer HL.

Seven Men Missing After Skeena River Incident

In Hazelton B C on June 16 seven miners are missing and believed drowned after their upturned canoe was found near Lorne creek on the Skeena river. Among the missing is John P. Multy a mining engineer from Louisville.

Russia and Japan settle on Washington as plenipotentiaries meet

In St. Petersburg on June 16 Russia agrees to Washington as the meeting place for plenipotentiaries with Japan to name three ex alted envoys likely including Ito Komura and Yamagata. Russia's two representatives are expected to be Aaron Rosen and M Nelidoff with Witte's name also mentioned as a possibility.
