Monks of St George Monastery in Wadi Qelt Remain Hidden
In Jericho area a Greek Orthodox monastery of St George clings to a cliff in a 600 foot gorge. Once home to 600 monks, only eight remain who now work in Jericho orange groves and live in cliff caves above the monastery. Visitors rarely reach the site by a rough Romani-built road and strict rules limit photography and stays. The abbey, led by a St George who has lived in a cave for 19 years, hosts infrequent tours and a few school groups, with frescoes and incense filling the tiny chapel.
