Trial in Kaufmann case opens amid denials of guilt
In Flandreau South Dakota on June 14 the defense for Mrs Emma Kaufmann of Sioux Falls opened denying guilt in the death of her domestic Agnes Poirers. Doctors Germain and Olney testified diabetes and illness rather than injury caused the death. The court kept order as spectators watched the proceedings. In Detroit Milwaukee was named host for the next American Association of Nurserymen convention with J W Hill of Des Moines elected president and George C Seager of Rochester as secretary.

A San Francisco jury found Mayor Eugene E Schmitz guilty of extortion after one hour and thirty five minutes of deliberation. The verdict was read in open court as crowds gathered outside Bush Street and the judge set the sentencing for Wednesday June 27.
