Senate approves direct popular vote for senators resolution

The Senate passed by 64 to 24 a constitutional amendment to elect senators by direct popular vote. The Bristow amendment giving federal supervision was adopted after a 44 to 44 tie broken by the vice president. The measure moves to conference with the House, with prospects of House rejection.

World poll shows Root amendment dead in Senate

The New York World reports a national poll on the Root amendment to the Canadian reciprocity bill. It states the measure is dead before the Senate and forecast final approval in the bill’s original form, with 33 against, 20 for, 20 noncommittal, and 18 absent. two thirds of noncommittal and absentees likely oppose the amendment.

Judge rules spanking by husband grounds for divorce

Des Moines June 13 Judge Lawrence Degraff of Polk County District Court ruled that a spanking given by a husband in front of dinner guests constitutes sufficient grounds for divorce. On the witness stand Mrs. Christine Devine testified that her husband Reuben Devine carried out the act.

Chicago Bank Consolidation Creates Nation's Largest

On June 13 the Continental and Commercial Bank announced it has become the United States' largest bank after consolidating with the Hibernian Banking association. The deal adds assets totaling 265 million dollars, as stated by President George M. Reynolds.

Lumber Trust Sued Over Output Cuts in 1904

At a state hearing on an ouster suit against the lumber trust, Long-Bell Lumber president R A Long testifies the firm cut yellow pine output by about a third in six months of 1904 to avoid depreciation and expenses. He says price lists were advisory and that cooperation could save about 20 percent of timber from waste.

In Madison on June 13 the assembly passed a bill changing the name of Stephenson park in Door county to Peninsula park. The move is seen as a jab at the junior senator who reportedly gave 25000 dollars for the park’s purchase on the condition his name be used.

Suit by C W Post over closed shop dismissed

C W Post of Battle Creek Mich filed suit in federal court against the American Federation of Labor and the Bucks Store and Range Co seeking to prevent a closed shop and claiming 750000 dollars in damages. Judge Dyer dismissed the case on a demurrer holding the court had no jurisdiction.
