One Dead and Dozens Injured in Alpena Excursion Train Wreck

An excursion train of over 500 people on the Detroit and Mackinaw railway derailed at Black River near Alpena while traveling at forty miles an hour. One man August Grosinski was killed. about fifty injured. rescue and emergency efforts followed. The German Aid Society of Alpena sponsored the trip.

Meridian Mississippi June 9 A promised negro uprising led by Green Johnson and Nate Moore was thwarted as white residents armed themselves and arrested the leaders. A letter signed by a negro Baptist preacher named Ruffin urged bands to form at El Rio Kemper county and march to Green Johnsons house to kill whites and burn farms. Outnumbered two to one the blacks were intimidated and the danger appears past though districts remain on alert. News from Marion says residents are tense and ready for emergencies as the threat subsides.
