Egyptian forces offered stiff resistance in western Sinai while a U.N. cease-fire sought to halt fighting on the Jordanian front. Israel claimed advances west of the Jordan River and toward the Dead Sea, with Jerusalem still partly closed to civilians.
On day four of the Arab-Israeli war Arab High Command claims its planes destroyed an Israeli armored unit on a coastal road near El Arish and that resistance held. Israeli forces report ongoing combat at Bir Gif Gaza and Mitla Pass while Egyptian troops organize along the eastern Nile Valley 40 miles west of the Suez Canal. Front lines extend through Jordan west of the Jordan River after a 60 hour clash with Jordanian Arab Legionnaires.
The 1967 Minnesota Legislature passed reforms including a requirement that auto insurers provide a stated reason when canceling a policy. The law also mandates uninsured motorist coverage on all auto policies and allows policyholders to complain to the insurance commissioner. Strong entities include Minnesota Legislature and head office of insurers in St. Paul.
Two traffic deaths in central Minnesota Wednesday night include Carol Wegner a 17 year old graduate of Litchfield High School who was driving when her car hit a Great Northern train. Nearby Gar rit Striker a 17 year old farmer died when his tractor towing a car collided with Arthur Bohlsen Jr. 19 as Bohlsen's car hit Striker's tractor. Neil Peltier 27 Center City died in the White Bear Lake crash. John Freitag 37 St. Paul and Mrs Janice Freitag 29 St. Paul were hospitalized in critical condition. Wayne Nelson 47 Forest Lake was treated and released.
Tel Aviv reports its forces defeated Egyptian units in multiple tank battles and now hold the major routes to the Suez Canal after driving Egyptians from Mitla Pass, located two miles east of Suez.
The Pentagon said Israeli torpedo boats and aircraft mistakenly attacked a U S Navy ship about 15 miles north of the Sinai Peninsula in the Mediterranean. Initial reports listed four Americans dead and 53 wounded.
The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis will increase housing charges by 14 dollars per quarter for students in campus residence halls starting in the fall of 1967. This hike covers both room and board costs.
Herman E. Miller 28, philosophy instructor at the State College of Iowa Cedar Falls, was killed when a traffic crash occurred. Two recent graduates, Eunice Steumpfig 21 State Center and Barbara Ruedy 22 Middle Amana, were injured and hospitalized in Fair condition at Freeport Memorial Hospital.
Cairo radios report three air raid alerts as Egyptian and Algerian troops move near Cairo Airport and Sinai front lines. Citizens fear unrest while U S and other Westerners seek relocation. 85 American internees held at a Cairo hotel await transport to Alexandria as authorities allow some to stay.
The United Nations Security Council prepared a summons to reconvene and assess adherence to cease-fire resolutions by Arab and Israeli forces. Soviet and Canadian proposals sought tools to ensure full compliance, while Egyptian officials signaled continued fighting and Israel pledged restraint if Arabs joined.
Hormel & Co. announced for the six months ending 1967 that net income after taxes rose to 4,358,262 from 425,791 the prior year. Sales reached 259,978,630 up 10.7 percent with tonnage up 6.7 percent, aided by hog supplies and plant efficiency. An extra 0.50 dividend was paid May 15 and regular dividend rose to 0.40. future results depend on seasonal meat packing factors.
