Prep baseball rivals Austin and Winona square off in the Region One final at Marcusen Park. First to win heads to the State Tourney at Midway Stadium. Austin seeks its 19th State bid. Winona goes for its first.
The Minnesota Twins swept Cleveland 7-3 in 15 innings and 13-9 to seize first place in the AL West after a rain soaked twinbill. Jim Kat, Ken Sanders, and Ray Corbin shut down the Indians late in game one, while Joe Decker pitched six strong innings in game two as Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew led the offense with multi hit days.
Austin Moose posted two 4 3 wins over Ellendale Geneva Merchants to raise their record to 13 8. Dave Colburn and Lyle Cline sparked a seventh inning rally in game one with Colburn stealing home. Colburn Norb Schmitt each had two hits. Mike McMahon earned the first win and pitched the second game. The Moose head to Protovia Iowa and then Sioux Falls South Dakota for a two day tourney.
Rose Creek defeats Hayfield 9 to 8 in a Merchants League baseball game. Fred Ulven and Rich Schammel sparked Rose Creek with multi hit effort while B Bendtson earned the win. Dave Lindo led Hayfield with three hits as Rose Creek hosts Johnsburg Sunday at 7 p.m.
Austin sprinters Jirele and Gibart lead as they prepare for the Class AA State track meet at St Cloud Apollo. Jirele aims to avenge a regional 880 setback to Mike Newman of John Marshall while Gibart seeks a two mile podium spot against Al Mayer.

Drafted fourth overall by the San Diego Padres, he also faced NFL and NBA options while aiming for College World Series play. He eyes pitching the opener against Oklahoma and plans to decide his sport after assessing offers.
