UNDER THE HAYSTACK Food budget study shows how a dollar is spent
A 16 year study published by a livestock journal breaks down grocery spending into main categories. Eight cents go to dairy and seven to baked goods while 28 cents cover dry groceries and 25 cents for meat. The report also traces a 320 bill through perishables and dry groceries with detailed allocations to produce, frozen foods, non foods, and alcohol and coffee. It notes about 80 percent of a twenty dollar bill is edible items while 20 percent covers non food items.
