Des Moines plans a corner stone ceremony for its new municipal building on June 14 accompanied by an exposition of the Des Moines plan of city government. Delegations from many cities will attend to study the question on the grounds. Governor Eberhart names a 26 member Minnesota delegation for the Roosevelt reception in New York on June 18, omitting a Mankato representative.
Miss Sarah Haines writes from Sitka Alaska about the Presbyterian Mission School on Baranof Island. She describes the work, facilities, staff, daily routines, student mix of Indian Russian and white heritage, and plans to expand to accommodate 150 to 200 children while noting health and climatic challenges.
William Sydney Porter known as O Henry, famed short story writer, died at Polytechnic hospital after an operation. He was 46, born in Texas, had worked as a cowboy, sheep herder, and druggist before journalism on the Houston Post. Mrs Porter was en route from South Carolina.
St Paul reports cattle ranges from good to choice steers $6.50 to $7.50 and hogs at $9.00 to $9.15, with sheep at $5.00 to $6.25 and lambs $7.50 to $9.00. Chicago oats mix with July at 36% and December at 35%, hogs around $9.15 to $9.35, beef cattle from $5.70 to $8.35, and sheep at $3.25 to $7.35.
Minneapolis reports Charles Vandewarker, once a St. Paul boy, had been ill and despondent for weeks. He was found in his lodging house room with a bullet wound over the heart by two friends who forced the door after hearing the shot. He is not expected to live.
Private Fortney of the Fourth Cavalry stationed at Fort Meade was shot in Sturgis by an unknown assailant. The bullet pierced his back and he is in the post hospital in critical condition.
Grain markets report Minneapolis and Duluth price movements for wheat and flax. July wheat at Minneapolis trades around $1.03 to $1.04 with various No. 1 and No. 2 grades noted. Flax prices show on track and arriving July at about $2.05 and September at $1.70.
