Turkish vessel explosion kills eighty as smugglers tried Tripoli landfall
A Turkish sailing ship carrying contraband munitions bound for Tripoli blew up near Port Zargiss. The blast drowned the crew and eighty fishermen ashore. The ship carried rifles and 500 barrels of powder. Local authorities surrounded the vessel with armed fishing boats, but the explosion occurred as they prepared to board. The captain is believed to have ignited the cargo to avoid capture. The disaster also follows a wreck where two passenger coaches left the track and a boat capsized, with several dead.
