Navy ends search for 73 missing after destroyer split
The Navy called off the hunt for 73 sailors missing from the Evans after it was cut in two by the Australian carrier Melbourne during SEATO maneuvers. Most presumed asleep in forward bunks when the ship sank in 5,400 feet of water about 650 miles southwest of Manila. Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Hyland ordered a court of inquiry into the incident.

Stowaway Falls From Wheel in Madrid Flight Death
Two young Cubans rode hidden in the wheels of an Iberia DC8 from Havana to Madrid. One fell to death after takeoff, the other Armando Socarras Ramirez survived gravely ill after seven and a half hours at high altitude. He described a companion who hid behind the right wheel. Pilot initially saw nothing amiss. Prior wheel stowaways include a 17 year old Mexican in 1966 and a 17 year old Mexican found dead in 1967 Los Angeles.
