Washington June 3 A congressional probing committee presses Secretary Knox to unveil state department records showing the $1600 balance of a $2450 voucher for artist Rosenthal’s portrait of former Secretary Day. Taft certifies the fund covered emergencies. Roosevelt once did so.
Louis Long of Oakland is killed and Mrs. Riley of Portland wounded when husband of the latter shoots during a getaway pursuit. Riley's chase with a second car is cheered by spectators as the assailant overtakes the downed vehicle.
Columbus Ohio June 3 The jury in the case of Representative George B Nye indicted on the charge of soliciting a bribe of 500 from State Printer Crawford returned a verdict of not guilty.
Wheat prices listed in Duluth for June 2 show No. 1 Northern at 84 cents, No. 2 Northern at 986?c, July at 988c, and September at 8c. Flax price on track and to arrive is 2.22 dollars for July and current price 2.22 dollars.

Elbert H. Gary chairman of United States Steel testified before the Branley Steel trust committee that U S Steel helped avert the 1907 financial panic by purchasing Tennessee Coal and Iron at a price above value to prevent a crash. He urged government control and publicity of corporations and asked for a public guidance source, saying heads of the steel industry seek a balance between Sherman laws and destructive competition. Other executives summoned include W B Dickson and John Lambert.
Representative Stanley asked E. H. Gary about United States Steel's Minnesota railroads ore beds and freight rates. The hearing explored alleged discrimination and whether the steel company and the Hill roads controlled Lake Superior region outlets for regional products.
President Taft said the Sherman anti trust law is not antiquated but is only beginning to show its usefulness. He responded to questions from callers on June 3 in Washington, stating the law remains applicable and valuable.

Judge Burch special assistant to the attorney general told Representative Stephens that the White Earth Indian agency in Minnesota should be investigated by a congressional committee this summer.
