Nature complicates pollution control by scientists
Scientists struggle to control phosphorus pollution from both human sources and natural runoff. Experts explain spring snowmelt and freezing cycles cause peak phosphorus wash into lakes, with peatlands and grasslands contributing significantly in northern Minnesota. Contour plowing and soil conservation help reduce erosion but may not halt nutrient runoff entirely.
