Berlin AP report says the United States is set to protest after an anti American demonstration damaged the U S military mission in East Germany. Police did not intervene as about 300 protesters tore down two U S flags and broke a flagpole.
Suburban Twin City children die in separate drownings after the state endures its heaviest rain in 73 years. Branda Nickell, 2, drowns in a rain swollen pond near North St. Paul. Stephen Youngdahl, 4, drowns in a Bloomington construction pit. Jack Lakan, 5, drowns in a rain swollen Coon Creek. Weather bureau predicts more showers through Thursday with up to two inches of rain. Road washouts close Trunk Highway 27 near Morris and Cedar Avenue south of the metropolitan Stadium also floods.
Gov Volpe ordered a full inquiry into alleged abuse of the Massachusetts leave of absence system. McCarthy reported a chain of job swaps via leaves, with as many as three transfers in one case. He estimated about 2,000 workers could be cut from payroll.
Lt. Jorris riding Gemini Project instruments helped develop space navigation gear set for use aboard a Gemini spacecraft on Thursday. ABC TV taped St Joris and instruments for a nationwide fill in during the Gemini telecast.
Communist antiaircraft fire shot down two U S Navy planes during raids on North Viet Nam. A rescue pilot said no chance the five American crewmen could survive. The heaviest U S air loss since raids began.
Ebony magazine reports that Air Force Captain Edward Dwight Jr., America's first Black astronaut, was dropped from the U S space program for additional training. NASA says it does not reveal applicant names, and Dwight reportedly remains in the Air Force with bomber test duties at Wright-Patterson.
The ASCS extended disaster aid in May to farmers across 187 counties in 14 states amid floods tornadoes and droughts. Aid reached growers in over two dozen states with emergency funds for land restoration and reduced price grain for livestock. Several states including Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin Missouri Ohio New Mexico appear among the affected areas.

Two North Iowa men were hurt when a light plane crashed into a field on the Harold Flugge farm about six miles southeast of Riceville. Pilot Pat Murphy 40 of Riceville and passenger Russell Lee 21 of Lime Springs were hospitalized at St. Marys Rochester with spine injuries. Officials said Murphy was piloting and the cause was under investigation.
Tom Kirk of Miracle Hill Orphanage in Greenville S C spoke to the Austin Christian Business Men's Committee detailing answered prayers. He described praying for food and a donor truck arriving at the school chapel. Kirk runs a 210 acre farm for 200 homeless children and says 52 broken families have been reunited.
About 200 residents of Brown's Valley Minnesota were evacuated by boat after a flash flood from heavy rains. Eight to ten inches fell east and northwest of town, feeding the Little Minnesota River which flooded ground floors. By 3 a.m. volunteers and the fire department rescued residents while water receded by dawn leaving mud and damage to assess.
The United Rubber Workers of America representing about 23 000 workers began a strike at 19 U S Rubber Co plants across 14 states after the old contract expired at midnight. Union coordinator Herbert Dawson said talks recessed at 2 30 a m and would resume later today after ongoing negotiations since Tuesday.

In Duluth a young Yugoslavian seaman Pasko Novakovic jumped ship Friday and remains at large sought by immigration officials. The ship captain moved the freighter to a different dock after Novakovic vanished from the grain dock. The vessel sailed to Yugoslavia on Sunday. In St Paul notices go out stating that several small charitable groups will be exempt from the Charities Registration Act following 1965 legislative action.
Funeral services will be held in St Paul Thursday for Dr Albert J Northrup 94 the oldest Methodist clergyman in Minnesota He died Tuesday after 63 years in ministry He retired in 1957 after serving churches at Lake Crescent South Dakota Big Stone City Minnesota Ortonville Minn St Anthony Park St Paul Minneapolis Red Wing and Duluth He was superintendent of the St Paul District in 1927 and led the Minnesota Federation of Churches 1935–1937 Meanwhile Miss Minnesota Elizabeth Carroll Bloomington Minn was eliminated in the Miss USA pageant at Miami Beach despite an injured ankle and recent broken cast removal.
