Cambridge Neb June 1 Mrs Lena Feekin of McCook and H H Culbert of Brimfield Illinois died after the Burlington wreck at Indianola Monday raising the death toll to eighteen. Injured survivors are expected to recover.
From Managua on June 1 officials report the Fortress Saloma exploded with the palace and adjacent structures sustaining damage. A considerable loss of life is reported with casualties expected to rise as rescue operations continue.
St Paul June 1 James J Hill says he will quit railroading after a time and arranged a 600 million bond issue to keep the Great Northern financially strong for the future. He denies any aim to consolidate with the Burlington or build new main lines, saying funds will go to small lines and improvements. The bonds are a lump issue to avoid future small bonds.
In New York Great Northern officials avoid comment on a proposed 600 million bond issue while Wall Street expects James J. Hill to push a merger between Great Northern and Burlington. Miguel Ahumada remains federal governor in the palace while General Louis Villar with General Rabaga commands the city with 2 500 troops.
Washington reports that effective July 1 the three division reorganization places Major General Frederick D. Grant in command of the Eastern division in New York and Major General Arthur Murray in command of the Western division in San Francisco. The Central division commander at Chicago is yet to be selected. General Murray will relieve Major General William H. Carter as commander of the maneuver division at San Antonio, Texas for two to three months before Grant takes command there for a similar period.
Washington June 1 public hearings on the Canadian reciprocity bill nearly wrapped up as the senate finance committee set next Wednesday for a vote on reporting the measure. Milwaukee June 1. Track elevations and depressions in and around Milwaukee face a combined cost near 7 million dollars after a Wisconsin railroad commission ruling. The decision requires south side tracks of the Northwestern and Chicago Milwaukee St Paul lines to be elevated to the city limits, with about 7 million dollars in expenses. Depressing the Milwaukee Road tracks on the Northwest Side, estimated at about 2.6 million, will be reviewed by the rate commission immediately.
Postmaster General Hitcheock announced seventy four second class post offices to be postal savings bank depositories effective June 27. The list includes Oelwein Oskaloosa and Spencer in Iowa Gladstone and Sault Ste Marie in Michigan Montevideo and New Ulm in Minnesota Mandan and Valley City in North Dakota Camton and Dallas South Dakota and Hartford and Tomahawk in Wisconsin.
