A major blaze in Guayaquil Ecuador on July 19 destroyed ninety blocks of principal streets including the custom house and railway station. The estimated loss to buildings and merchandise runs to five million dollars, and the city is left without gas with only river water available for firefighting.
A State Department briefing from Cape Town by United States Consul General Wigham dated May 28 reports South Africa faces a rapid postwar rebuilding. Farms will be repaired, stock restored, and machinery bought while interior goods supply may lag demand. He notes nations are creating direct ocean routes to Cape Colony and the United States ships more than twice as much to South Africa as any country except Britain.
Vienna dispatch reports a devastating cyclone in Austria injuring many people and causing extensive damage to buildings and crops. The Daily Express correspondent notes widespread destruction across towns and villages with emergency crews responding.
Tropical rainfall near Aussita Hungary triggered floods in the Tyrol causing railway damage near Unzmarket and a train derailment with fatalities and many injuries. Lightning destroyed houses while a church scaffold collapse at Rovisoe injured thirteen mourners. Crops covering twenty square miles near Villach Corintha were ruined.
A tornado swept over Moffitsville near Dannemora in Clinton county destroying a starch factory a carding mill and other property. A steam launch belonging to Seth Thomas of Connecticut sank in Upper Chateaugay lake destroying his camp and boat house. A cottage owned by Frank Sawyer of Chicago near Seth Thomas cottage was badly damaged and one man was severely injured.
A tornado passed within a mile of Chesterville Ontario laying waste to about sixty rods of land. Dwellings were overturned and dead cattle lay at many farms. Several persons were killed and a number injured. Damage estimated over 200 600 dollars.
A Denver report notes an unusual wind storm at 2 p.m. with 42 mph NW winds for five minutes and a half inch of rain. W. P. Swallows, a leading Kokomo merchant and postmaster, was instantly killed by a lightning strike.
Mattoon Indiana July 19 In a Big Four freight wreck at Lena Indiana engineer Wickliffe Killefer of Mattoon was killed. The engine and five cars were destroyed with cars from a siding projecting into the main track. Several trains following narrowly escaped wrecking.
Funerals for Daly-West mine disaster victims were held today in Park City. Business was suspended, flags flew at half mast, and crepe adorns public buildings and many private homes.
Jennings Louisiana July 19 fire at the well shows little progress toward extinguishment and still burns with the same intensity as Tuesday night when it first ignited.
Rhinelander Wis July 18 three men were killed and one seriously injured when two freight trains each with sixty cars collided head on near Pembine. The dead were J A Anderson Charles Johnson William Raymond all from Gladstone. Frank Thorne the injured brakeman expected to recover.
Washington reports the immigration bureau figures showing 648,743 immigrants and 82,055 other alien passengers totaling 730,798 for the last fiscal year. This marks an increase of 160,825 immigrants over 1901 with the top origins listed, including Sicily and Ferdinto.

Baltimore July 19 structural iron workers and hodcarriers organized and ready to join the striking carpenters when called. If they walk out, building operations hampered two weeks will be suspended. Hodcarriers union has 51 colored men. Bricklayers and plasterers would cease work and the carpenters three unions form a district council refusing contractor compromise but holding for 3 dollars a day for nine hours with eight on Saturday.
Duluth Minn July 19 James A Smith aged seventy one years former county auditor of St Louis county for three terms and an early settler at the Head of the Lakes placed a revolver to his head and fired death ensuing instantly He was taken ill recently and family noted his mind had become affected and they attribute the deed to this cause Decedent was widely known through out the northern part of the state and until within a few years ago was very active in politics.
In Carbondale Illinois on July 19 Jau bert brothers who ran a small coal mine at Oroville were killed by the wife of one man. After a drunken return home the husband assaulted his wife and her sister, then the wife shot him three times. The brother who witnessed the attack was also shot and died soon after. The woman surrendered as a coroner's jury later exonerated her.
Sam Faughn of Metropolis was shot and killed by Jasper Abbott of Rock Illinois during the city street fair. After a dispute with remarks to ladies, Abbott fired twice wounding Faughn who wrested the gun and shot back, dying after walking a short distance. Abbott jailed amid risk of lynching. Faughn, a Knight of Pythias and noted semi professional baseball player.
Atoka Oklahoma Territory July 19 Mrs Daniel Grant and her daughter Mrs Jack Reeves along with a man named Nuckles were killed returning from church near String town. Nuckles was forced from the wagon and shot. Mrs Grant and Mrs Reeves were shot as the team bolted. The assailant’s identity is unknown.
Washington reports that if Senator Spooner loses re election in Wisconsin the President may nominate him as chief justice to replace Fuller. If Spooner secures re election he could be the first to fill a cabinet vacancy. The administration hopes for his fall reelection.
Jacob Heidelberger, eighty three, a pioneer resident, committed suicide in his Minneapolis home. He fired two bullets into his brain after methodically preparing the deed, but no reason is known.
Indianapolis July 19 After a secret session the convention referred Mitchells recommendations to a special committee of president and district chiefs. The panel is expected to urge adoption and set an assessment rate of 19 percent or higher. Illinois delegates report a $50,000 donation to aid the anthracite strike.
Chicago July 19. Freight handlers union president Curran calls for a mass meeting Sunday night to act on four railroads failing to reinstate all old workers. He says an arbitration agreement required old men to be rehired when the strike ends and names Santa Fe Pan Handle Northwestern and Illinois Central as not complying.
Jacksonville laborers in all building trades walk out after contractors refuse eight-hour day. Virtually all construction halted. Central Labor Union weighs a general strike but takes no definite action.
Seattle authorities report no word on the escaped convict Harry Tracy after he left the Sawyer lake cabin. Sheriff Cudihee and a large posse return to Seattle with guarded notes that Tracy may reemerge. guards remain posted at Ravendale Covington and Auburndale as manhunt continues.
Report from Saguache Colorado dated July 19 says a posse clashed with Denver and Rio Grande train robbers on Ohio check. One robber and two officers were killed and another robber captured if the fight occurred. The pursuing group likely included Special Agent Brown.
Variola district July 1 report says Roger Brown a negra charged with killing two men two miles east of Variola. Brown fled toward Natchez to avoid lynching after quarrel with Ellis. A White camp foreman struck Brown, but Brown fatally attacked the foreman with a wooden club.
