Freight Rates to be Advanced in Southeastern Territory
Louisville July 18. Executives of railroads agreed to raise freight rates in the Southeastern Freight association and the Southeast ern Mississippi Valley territory south of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi. The increase, from 1 to 10 cents per 100 pounds, follows a similar move by the Southwestern Freight association. Some managers opposed the hike as untimely, but the rise is seen as necessary to cover rising costs. Tariffs are being prepared in Louisville and likely filed after August, with the new rates effective September 1 under interstate commerce rules allowing 30 days’ notice.
