U S strategists see Khrushchev aiming for a short term two way propaganda victory over Congo turmoil. Officials say the United States can help the West and blunt Soviet tactics through cautious cooperation before world opinion.
Sheriff reports 52 cases of strong Iowa beer seized from a Hutterite colony in Graceville Minnesota for unpaid state tax. No charges yet. Truck with 80 cases was stopped in Elk Point South Dakota and traced to Minnesota. State liquor official to study case before action. Hutterite colony comprises about 60 people on 3,000 acres.
Belgian forces ignore Patrice Lumumba’s 6 am deadline and remain in the Congo as U.N. Emergency Force arrivals begin. Lumumba denounces Brussels in parliament amid rising nationalist tensions, while violence sparks a street riot over a Congolese boy’s death and Belgian store owner actions.
Mrs Larry Alland and three children are safe in Brussels after fleeing the Belgian Congo. The Evans family in Cincinnati will host them next week before a southern visit then return to Austin. Rev Alland remains in the Congo. both he and Rosemary Evans are ordained missionaries.
Russell Warren 39 is being questioned after the fatal shooting of his wife Marjorie 37 near their Minneapolis home. Police say clues are scarce and robbery is ruled out as her purse remained intact.
Cuba faces regional alarm as the OAS prepares a special session on hemispheric solidarity amid fears of Soviet intervention. Argentina and Ecuador press for shifting Cuba concerns from the UN to the OAS while Washington warns Moscow to keep hands off.
About 10 500 hourly workers at Lockheed Missiles and Space Division sites in Van Nuys Sunnyvale Santa Cruz and Van denberg AFB California plus Hawaii and Holloman AFB New Mexico voted on a contract offer. Hawaii and Holloman workers did not walk out. Ballots counted late Friday retroactive to June 13 yield a 3 cent hourly raise next year and freezing of 6 cents in prior cost of living increases.
Sen John F Kennedy accepted the Democratic nomination in Los Angeles telling 60,000 at the Coliseum that his public policy decisions will be his own as an American Democrat and free man. He challenged Nixon and outlined a fighting Democratic leadership in the White House and urged voters not to base choices on his religion.
ST. PAUL AP reports the State Highway Department may switch to direct purchase of tracts for highways to avoid rackets in land condemnation cases. Commissioner L P Zimmerman said that what he termed the current practice risks delay and elevated costs.
Robert Dreher a 17 year old from Emmetsburg Iowa was sentenced to 5 to 40 years on first degree robbery and 15 to 40 years on first degree murder to be served consecutively for the June 5 Fairmont Rex Roy Brockman robbery slaying. Judge Irvine set the terms and urged Dreher not to give up hope.
Senator Kennedy plans a heavy August Senate agenda with a major wage bill and a farm income boost. He backs a large defense increase and aims to push an emergency farm aid measure, while existing laws already expanded defense spending under President Eisenhower.
