Johnstown Pennsylvania witnesses a mine disaster at the Rolling Mill of Cambria Steel. Rescue crews save twenty two miners while hundreds remain unaccounted for as bodies are recovered in a grim scene.
The viceroy of the two Kwangs, on behalf of the Chinese empire, awarded United States Consul Mc Wade at Canton the order of the double dragon for distinguished service. He is the first foreign consul to receive the honor, according to the dispatch from Washington dated July 12.
In Valparaiso Chile on July 12 a reservoir burst at Claudio Vienna's Las Palmas estate. Thirty five people drowned and a house was destroyed in the resulting flood.
Manila July 12 General Maxilon convicted of treason at Cebu is sentenced to ten years imprisonment and a $2000 fine. General Novois is sentenced to seven years and the same fine. General Davis hands command on Mindanao to General Sumner. Cholera death toll rises with 2,181 cases and 1,718 deaths in Manila and 12,476 cases and 9,357 deaths in provinces.
Scotland Yard ran tight surveillance over more than 1000 anarchists and political refugees who gathered in London for the coronation period. The intensified watch raised tensions at the Anarchists' club, where several members were stabbed in recent quarrels.
The 1902 National Educational Association meeting in Minneapolis ends after 55 department meetings and six general sessions. About 20 000 to 25 000 attendees, nearly 4 000 more than Detroit, heard premier speakers as president Eliot from Harvard is seen as next host choice in Boston.
The Minnesota Supreme Court upholds Hugo as mayor of Duluth after ruling against Truelsen in a contested election. Hugo's margin is four votes after counting disputed ballots, including one ballot with mixed marks counted for Truelsen. The decision notes initial ballots were not signed by judges and must be counted.
Bloodhounds and dozens of deputy sheriffs scoured brush near Covington Seattle July 12 but could not flush out the fugitive Outlaw Harry Tracey. A cordon of marksmen surrounded the area with rumors of a battle and seven deputies killed or wounded proved groundless. The rugged terrain could conceal any clash for hours.
Copies of Honolulu newspapers arrived at the navy department amid celebrations and rejoicings as King Edward VII's coronation was expected. Honolulu lacked cable links and remained unaware that the ceremony had been postponed.

Indianapolis July 12 The National Civic Federation plans another effort to end the anthracite strike ahead of the miners convention. Secretary Ralph M Easley of New York will visit to meet the miners and pursue overtures toward settlement.
Reported arrivals from Costa Rican ports carry word of revolutionary activity in Nicaragua. Bluefields is said to have fallen to rebels, with the insurgents moving toward the Chontales district.
Honolulu reports Kilauhea volcano Kilauea Kilaua dying to normal conditions as Mauna Loa arrives from Hawaii with news that the fire has disappeared though a large smoke column remains.
Minneapolis jury finds Captain John Fitchette known as Coffee John guilty of receiving a $200 gratuity to influence the appointment of John Long to the police force. The jury out just over an hour after hearing testimony that the payoff occurred August 21, 1901 at Fitchette’s restaurant with the mayor present. Long was later appointed and then dismissed from the force after testifying to the bribe.
