The viceroy of the two Kwangs, on behalf of the Chinese empire, awarded United States Consul Mc Wade at Canton the order of the double dragon for distinguished service. He is the first foreign consul to receive the honor, according to the dispatch from Washington dated July 12.

Minneapolis jury finds Captain John Fitchette known as Coffee John guilty of receiving a $200 gratuity to influence the appointment of John Long to the police force. The jury out just over an hour after hearing testimony that the payoff occurred August 21, 1901 at Fitchette’s restaurant with the mayor present. Long was later appointed and then dismissed from the force after testifying to the bribe.
