June unemployment climbs to 7.5 percent in big rise

The Labor Department reports June jobless rate at 7.5 percent, up 0.2 points and the largest monthly rise since last year’s recession. Unemployment up 280,000 to 7.1 million, employment down 200,000 to 87.5 million, with rises across most groups.

Austin Youth Hit by Auto in City Crash

A 15-year-old Austin boy, riding a bicycle, was struck by a car around 11 30 a m at W Oakland Ave and 12th St and is listed in fair condition at St Olaf Hospital. He has burns a hand injury and possible chest injuries. Police investigate. He was transported by Austin Cab Ambulance Service.

Fourth of July Festivities at Austin East Side Lake

MPCA reverses its dump site decision in Milepost 7 case

After a 10 hour meeting the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency reversed a prior ruling and denied land disposal permits for Reserve Mining Co Milepost 7 by a 6 to 0 vote. Reserve plans an appeal. Earlier the Natural Resources Commissioner denied the permits and Reserve appealed that decision as well.

Two Harbors Minnesota AP Reserve Mining Co filed notice of appeal in Lake County District Court after state agencies rejected Milepost 7 on land tailings disposal. The MPCA and other officials had supported Milepost 20, citing environmental health risks from Milepost 7 dust near the Silver Bay plant.

Rebel soldiers in Sudan reportedly launched a coup against President Jaafar el-Numairi but failed to secure control by midafternoon according to the Iraq news agency.

Wright re elected chairman of Austin School Board for 1976 77

Stephen Wright was reelected chairman of the Austin School Board at the annual meeting held at the Austin Area Vocational Technical Institute. Pat Stevens was named vice chair with other officers and committees appointed. The Board set a new meeting day for 7 30 p m on the third Thursday each month and designated The Austin Daily Herald as the official minutes and notices newspaper. Investment and depository banks were named and a January 1 1977 install of Burroughs computer equipment approved under a seven year plan. A joint board council meeting on traffic near Austin High and a three year LEAA grant for a school liaison officer were proposed.

Hormel Faces 60-Day Notice In Austin Contract Talks

Geo A Hormel and Co Austin plant receives 60 day cancellation notices from Local P 9 and the Amalgamated Meatcutters union as industry wide contract expirations approach September 1. Hormel officials plan wage hours and working conditions talks during the 60 day period. The last pact ended in 1973 after a three year agreement.

Christianson to not seek re election to Mower County Board

Mower County Commissioner Clifford Christianson who represents the first district announced Thursday he will not run again. He has served 12 years on the county board and currently chairs it. Filings for local state and county offices open Tuesday through July 20 in the County Auditor's office. The board also approved an airport zoning board and awarded a CSAH 6 project bid of 221392.76 to Osmundson Bros. Adams for four miles of work south of Adams and Tappi.
