President Kennedy reveals Soviet release of two U.S. fliers

President Kennedy announced that the Soviet Union freed two U.S. reconnaissance airmen held since July after their RB-47 was shot down over Arctic waters. He said the U.S. would extend the ban on espionage flights over Soviet territory and pressed for more time to shape America’s position on a test ban as relations begin a new phase.

Two U S Fliers Freed From Moscow Return Home

Capt Freeman Olmstead of Elmira New York and Capt John McKone of Topeka Kansas, crew of the RB47 shot down last May, arrived at the U S Embassy in Moscow and were released for travel to a Dutch liner. Ambassador Thompson confirmed their departure details while noting their recovery from injuries.

FDIC Reopens Sheldon Bank as $1 Million Uninsured Gap Exists

The FDIC reopened the 56 year old Sheldon National Bank after assistant cashier Bur nise Geiger admitted a $2 million embezzlement. About 75 of roughly 2,200 depositors crowded in for payouts totaling $2.5 million leaving just over a million dollars uninsured. The first depositor received $8,177.94, and deposits are paid by checks from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

U S Plane Tracks Captive Ship Toward Africa
