The Navy launched the largest shipborne balloon yet, a 200 foot tall, 173 foot diameter plastic bag filled with helium at 5:32 am EST. The test on the Atlantic east of Puerto Rico precedes bigger 22 mile high balloons for capturing cosmic ray data.
Secretary of the Air Force Dudley Sharp rejects an overall deterrent gap with the Soviet Union through 1963. He cautions the key issue is the total posture that would deter an attack, not a narrow missile count. Senate figures Saltonstall and Johnson assess or criticize the new intelligence estimates and the missile gap debate.
In St Paul a 54 year old woman Mrs Spencer fell into frigid Mississippi River waters and died after an ambulance doctor used a borrowed jackknife to perform heart massage on the dock. Despite repeated resuscitation efforts her heart stopped four times and she died in hospital.
More than 20 people mostly children perished in fires across the United States. In Manning South Carolina six Black people died when gasoline spilled and raced into a nearby fire. Tompkinsville Kentucky saw six children killed in a home blaze as parents fled with one survivor. Four children died in Philadelphia with others saved. Dallas Texas reported three children dead in a home fire. A 19 year old boy and 15 year old girl were found dead in a burned auto wreck near Hardwick Vermont from suspected carbon monoxide and an unexplained fire.
In Tulsa Oklahoma two boys Douglas Poplin and David Staley were saved after slipping through ice on a city park pond. Howard White age 12 used his Boy Scout training to reach them with a long pole and keep them afloat until rescuers arrived. White's father Robert Lloyd White is a scoutmaster.
In Algiers the riot on Boulevard Laterriere escalated to gunfire with rebels clashing with gendarmes and National Guardsmen. The scene drew crowds who fled as ambulances and heavy trucks arrived. Ten minutes of sporadic shooting left 19 dead and 153 wounded amid panic and turmoil.
Fire caused by faulty wiring in the Henry Wulff residence at 1009 Johnson, gutting the kitchen and living room and melting a television set. Off duty driver Dan Miller helped spot the blaze and call for help, saving the vacant house. Damage split as 2000 to home and 2000 to contents.
Four people died in Minnesota traffic accidents over the weekend. Lois Bottesi, 23, Minneapolis, died in a collision at the intersection of Highways 169 and 100 near Brooklyn Center. Harry Goose, 27, Ponemah, died when his car overturned on an icy road near Ponemah. Clarence Mattson, rural North Branch, died in a crash on a country road east of North Branch. Anna Kubitschek, 58, St Paul, died from injuries sustained near Cannon Falls during the New Year holiday.
In Algiers armed rightists held barricades while the army asserted control after Sunday clashes that killed 19 and wounded 153. About 1,000 insurgents remained in two pockets as France's inner struggle over Algeria's future continued under tight censorship.
Democratic leaders remained uncommitted to any party nominee after a weekend parade of hopefuls. President Truman drew attention with no commitments, while Sen. Symington’s bid faced questions about Truman’s support and Adlai Stevenson’s prospects amid party tensions.
Police sheriff and state highway patrol investigated a weekend series of traffic accidents. A group of three youths escaped injury when their car rolled near South River street. Ronald Greenlee and passengers suffered minor injuries. Carl Samuelson, Arlin Sawyer, and George Falconer had varying damages and injuries. Marion Jensen was fined for drunken driving after a collision with Donald Jensen.
Donald Holthaus a 12 year old led eight younger children to safety after a fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom in St Cloud Minnesota Saturday evening. He directed two brothers two sisters and four visitors children outside then called the fire department, with firefighters saying the blaze stayed confined to the upstairs.
Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey warned Sunday night that Richard Nixon is likely to become president unless the Democratic Party develops a stronger and more modern national program.
In Spithead Channel six ships struggle to separate an American freighter and the Norwegian tanker after a shattering crash. The Santa Alicia and the Germ remain at risk with fire and shallows a constant threat as tugs maneuver to safety.
The Navy will search the Gulf of Mexico seabed for wreckage of the National Airlines DC7B that crashed on November 16 killing 42. Investigators aim to confirm if a bomb caused the disaster and to locate the missing 69 year old William A. Taylor. FBI notes say William Vernon Spears, listed as a heavily insured passenger, was found alive in Phoenix.
The Mower County Board of Commissioners heard a proposal from road workers for a 15 cent increase in pay for the 52 hour week. Fred Miles of Local 867 said the union rejected the county’s bid to cut the work week by two hours without pay.
