Seventeen-year-old? No, sixteen escapes Mower County jail

A 16 year old juvenile escaped from the Mower County jail Wednesday afternoon by jumping from a second floor window. He crawled through a gap between roof and ceiling to a matron lounge and dashed to 1st Ave NE. He was captured at 2 10 a m in Brownsdale.

Up With People to visit Austin September second

The musical group Up With People will perform in Riverside Arena on September 2 as a kickoff to its Bicentennial show. A 150 performer cast is planned with rehearsals in Austin the week before the concert. The Chamber seeks city help to fund a stage purchase for the arena.

Austin school referendum panel formed to aid information

Announcement today states a citizen's committee will be appointed before a 7 p.m. January 30 meeting at the School Administration Building to help disseminate information about the upcoming Austin schools referendum. The group, about 15 members, will reach segments of the community, possibly include a survey, and assist with door to door material distribution.

Simon asks Congress for debt ceiling rise to 604 billion

Meany attacks Fords plan and calls for emergency jobs program

Planes collide over Mogadishu kill seven and injure 132

Two planes collided above Mogadishu causing seven deaths and 132 injuries. The Somali news agency cited the pilots among the dead and said the aircraft were not passenger planes, suggesting military involvement.
