Senate Apology Eases Brownsville Controversy In Closed Session

In Washington on January 22 the senate debated the Brownsville affair with a compromise resolution calling for an investigation of the incident while preserving president's authority over dismissals. Senator Tillman apologized for a humorous speech after clashes with Carmack and Spooner, and the session ended with broad attendance and no final vote on the resolution.

House backs expansion of field and coast artillery

Washington reports the House, in a unanimous vote, supports enlarging and improving the field and coast artillery. Debate arose from the political purity bill restricting corporate campaign contributions. The commerce and labor secretary would study conditions of women and child workers. the District of Columbia appropriation bill passed as sessions adjourned.

Soldiers Rampage in Columbus Wholesale District

Soldiers from the United States recruiting station swept through Columbus wholesale district attacking windows with stones sticks and bricks. Major Glenn dispatched 200 soldiers and 30 alleged marauders were rounded up after a Locust alley resort brawl where a soldier was beaten by a black man and ejected.
