Egyptian President Anwar Sadat revoked recent price increases on food, gas, and cigarettes amid protests that left eight dead after police fire. A 14 hour curfew was set for Cairo Alexandria and Suez with threats to shoot curfew violators. Riots in Egyptian Cities Amid Economic Strain

Riots erupted in Cairo and Alexandria as Egyptians resent free spending by playboys while the government struggles to secure aid from rich Arab states. In Alexandria 43 policemen were injured during clashes, with reports of unrest also in Suez City.

Racine fire victim identified as Paul Seaver

Paul Seaver a 21 year old Racine Township resident and restaurant cook died in a mobile home fire near Stewartville. Mower County Coroner Dr. George Stahl identified the body by dental records after the blaze began around 430 am in the mobile home’s central area. Fire crews from Grand Meadow and Stewartville fought the fire until 10 am with the cause listed undetermined by the state fire marshal. Seaver formerly from Stewartville was unmarried.

1976 Ends With Lowest Four Year Inflation Rise

The government reports December consumer prices rose four tenths of one percent, giving 1976 an annual inflation rate of 4.8 percent the smallest in four years. Food and nonfood prices rose modestly while grocery costs declined for the first December to December drop since 1961. Real earnings improved as take home pay rose slightly despite inflation.
