Senate Bills Ban Corporate Donations in Minnesota
In St Paul on January 17 two senate bills proposed to bar corporate donations to political parties or candidates. One bill requires annual reports to the public examiner verifying no violations. failure to report lets the state sue. A second bill would empower the public examiner to audit corporate funds and report unlawful disbursements to the governor. Other measures include local option elections in certain counties, mutual life company surpluses, and broadened rights for married women in contracts and property. Also proposed are pensions for all veterans of the 1862 Indian massacre and a mortgage registry tax set at 50 cents per $100. The house passed the county option resolution and continued work on juror selection procedures in Ramsey and Hennepin counties.
