John Hampton, a well known figure in negro church circles, shot and killed Mrs. Roselia Evans of 650 West Fifty sixth street and then drank carbolic acid, dying soon after. Both victims were colored. Authorities say the murder suicide stemmed from Mrs. Evans rejecting Hampton's attentions.
At the Pan American conference in Mexico City January 16 the Chilean delegation pushes for debate before assent to The Hague articles, seeking delay and withdrawal of other delegations. The move provokes strong indignation as Chile aims to undermine the conference and defy the United States and Mexico.
Havana January 16 The trial on Cuban post office frauds resumed with Eustes G Rathbone ex-director of posts of Cuba questioned about paying for furnishing his Havana residence from postal accounts He testified bills were charged endorsed and furnishings accounted for then returned to the government He noted the coachman salary and a uniform bought from postal funds were also charged and later disallowed by the government
Dr A L Hazlett on a Manila return from a mission says he opposed expansion but now supports holding the islands and aiding their moral restoration. He claims American policy suppresses vice and elevates standards, though antipathy to Americans may endure two generations. The Times notes growing Liberal unity under Asquith and Campbell-Bannerman after Rosebery’s Chesterfield speech.
